An old thermorest bag is now my sap sack for my straps. :)

Good idea now that I'm no longer using my thermorest(s).

Making my first trip to the BWCA in a month. Is sap a problem on the trees?

Many of the trees available in the BW are conifers. They like to share their sap but I've taken a little dirt and rubbed the sap until it's not sticky or transferable. No biggie.

Depends on your definition of problem...

Will you get sap on your straps in the BWCA?

Fair enough. We mostly hang on sap-less oaks down in here in Texas!

daverr - Yes. Sap will be an issue on your tree straps. Many folks who hang in conifer forests use a small bag to hold the straps apart from the other gear so sap doesn't transfer to other stuff.

If I'm willing to risk the rain, any reason why I need to hang my tarp every night? Falling cones, nuts, fruits?

Frankly I'd worry more about what birch tree is deciding to fall down tonight.

daverr- you nailed it...twigs, leaves, bugs, dust&dirt all fall even in light wind conditions. I have am integrated mossy net on my hammock so that keeps out most of the bothersome falling stuff. With the net I can string up my tarp in the sleeves without full deployment. That allows me to open the tarp pretty quickly if rain comes, but I still get that full sky view!
