I enjoy solo trips to the BWCA, but also like to take day trips on rivers. Because I can only drive one vehicle at a time I always return to the location where I started, often paddling upstream for 1/2 the time I have available, then turn around and paddle back to my entry point. I often wish I could have seen more landscape. What are some ways you've handled transportation and solo river canoeing that allow you to go from point A to point B without returning to point A again in the canoe?

i ride my bike. i leave it at the takeout, ride it back to the car with the canoe locked up. hopefully nothing gets stolen, hasn't happened yet and i've been doing it for thirty-five years.

I've done the same thing with a bike whitewater kayaking alone. Not very smart but I'm not accused of being a genius too often. Anyway, nothing bad has ever happened. I lock up the bike but trusted the kayak to not walk off.

In the summer I like to be on the water by 5 on a Saturday morning. That is before the love of my wife is willing to wake up and shuttle me around.

in addition to a bike, I've used inline skates (Cannon, Root) and my running shoes. I've also hitch hiked, but odd people pick you up.

I've done the bike thing and just had someone help shuttle car. I didn't like doing the bike after the fact so I unloaded the canoe, drove to the takeout and biked back to the put in. Just have to remember to go get your bike. That was on the St Louis mostly from Brookston to Cloquet.

I take frequent day trips on the St. Croix, usually at Osceola or Log House. Always go round trip. Usually it takes a bit longer to go upstream than down.
