if you have good solo experience, your own solo gear and food, and this interest you, let me know.
i am planning on a out and back from sawbill to phoebe. nothing too fast or aggressive, just relaxing-along the way and back.
5-6 nights.

We'll be coming out right before you go in. I'll be leaving Grand Marais 9/29. I have not been on the Lady Chain yet, but it interests me. It was the short option this year, but we chose to go farther north to Little Sag on our route Kawishiwi to Sawbill. have a good trip; I'll look forward to your report. Let me know how your alcohol stoves work in the cooler weather. I've found it sometimes helps to have some insulation between mine and the ground when It gets colder.

Boonie and bwcasolo, I'll be camped at Flour Lake Sept. 29th and 30th. Prior to some paddling (maybe Cherokee). Stop in if you want!
Think it's site 36 walk in lake front.

heading up on the 3rd for a week trip, just trying to figure out where to go.

butthead- It looks like we're going to just miss each other. I'll be leaving GM early on the 29th, heading north to CA and the northern side of Lake Superior on my way back to WV. Let me know if you'll be around GM on the 28th.

You too, bwcasolo.

Yours might be better stoves than my old one, but you might want to take a small piece of closed cell foam or bubble wrap to put under the foil for insulation from the cold ground. Maybe just using rocks to get it off the cold ground would improve it. I'll watch for the trip report.

my plan is to head to ely oct.3, and moose lake for a trip up to the border, birch, knife and back thru ensign and return. no tows, just relaxing paddling and enjoying the fall colors.

Have a good trip, bwcasolo! One of the nice things about solo is the ease of changing plans on a whim.

yes jan, it is the new plan. it's been over ten years since i paddled the waters of birch lake on my way to the man chain years ago.
i've always wanted to check out dorothy's place.

08/15/2014 07:49AM
bwcasolo, did the Moose/Knife/Vera/Ensign a few years back. Enjoyed it immensely, Birch Landing. Ribbon Rock. The portages into Vera and Ensign are most beautiful! Even the paddle on Moose/Newfound was neat, the boat trafick did not bother me.

I'm thinking of a trip second week in October after I get back from a business trip Oct 6/7th. I'll check this thread to see if anyone is going in around that time as I'm flexible to routes/destinations. October is a great time to be paddling.

I would love to join you but I only have a kayak and I know how that upsets the apple cart...for some of you. The plan at the moment is hike the Kek that weekend but would love to paddle with you guys instead.

It's a neat island! She had a nice site nestled in that bay/narrows. Is the target date still looking like oct 1? I had tried a Man Chain route but due to ice and wind conditions had to loop out of Knife via Crawford/Carp. Might tag along with others at least that far before heading up into "The Men".....just a thought. The oct 1 timeframe might actually work from my end...

im out. trip to Baltimore to visit daughter and sil trumps canoe trip. I thought it was going to happen in late October but the date has changed now.

I'd like to join you, but have another commitment on October 8th. However, if you don't mind if I split off and head back by myself early, I'd like to join you for approx. 4 days/3 nights (depends a little on the weather forecast the day I need head out).

If this sounds ok to you, we can chat more via email or on the phone.

So have you figured out which way your going yet, Jan said something about Moose to Knife.

08/26/2014 08:14AM
I'm looking at Mudro to Crooked to Basswood back to Mudro or a trip up the Arrowhead trail along the border and lower lakes.

i am still planning on moose lake sat, oct 4th. i will be leaving ne iowa friday night and maybe parking at latourels.

08/30/2014 05:13PM
Unless weather or other changes dictate I leave Des Moines Friday 10-3 but with open permit options I am going to adjust the date per leaf change over and other factors. It would be nice to meet up in Ely.
I have done the knife/kek/out ensign route, nice but want to explore something new. Apology for the high jack, but if anyone is up for an Echo Trail trip let's talk.

08/30/2014 10:12PM
I'm thinking about joining one of you guys. Going to the Q in a week for a couple weeks. Would like to finish the year on a good note. That meaning plenty of paddling and a Wing Night.

this is my final trip itinerary. i have decided to enter sawbill and head west to phoebe. no hurry, fish along the way, relaxing kind of trip. new lakes, bent paddle beer in duluth.

09/02/2014 08:22AM
I may be in that area around the same time attempting my first solo. I'm not positive which weekend yet and I've started steering away from the Lady Chain because Alton scares me my first time solo especially that time of year. I'll let you know when I make my final plans and look for you to say hi if I'm there or at Sawbill if exit day matches up.

09/02/2014 08:31AM
I'm still planning on this timeframe. I'm discussing with another potential partner for a tandem but just need to figure out a route. I would like to do the Mudro-Crooked and back or up Moose into Agnes via PP. Sawbill to Phoebe is an interesting option as well. I'll keep monitoring here as we get nearer. I'll post a final route when a decision is made! Some great ideas for fall trips!

09/07/2014 07:34AM
I'll be exiting on Sept. 30th. I would have been cool to see a familiar face. Have a great trip!

09/07/2014 09:49AM
When/where are you going in, ducks? We're exiting on the 27th @ Sawbill. I'll be in GM on the 27th and 28th, but will be leaving on the 29th. I'm sure you will enjoy your first solo! have fun :).

I'm entering on the 27th. Leaning towards an in and out trip from Kawishiwi Lake. But also considering something out of Sawbill or Baker as well as the Kawishiwi Triangle from either Lake One or South Kawishiwi River because it's been a few years since I've entered from Ely. If I do one of the Sawbill Trail EP's I'll be at Sawbill at 8:00am on the 27th getting a SR Q 16 to rent.

I know you are entering at Kawishiwi and exciting at Sawbill....... where will you be coming into Sawbill from?

09/07/2014 12:27PM
ducks-

Plan to loop up through Little Sag and down through Zenith-Lujenida-Kelso. Probably stay on Kelso the last night and leisurely exit by noon. Looks like I'll just miss you on both ends. Have a good trip whatever you decide to do.

An out and back from Kawishiwi Lake would be a nice trip. I imagine you've read my report from last fall. Another option would be the shorter trip I considered for this fall - Kawishiwi Lake, across the Lady Chain, and out Sawbill. I think the shuttle from Sawbill was relatively inexpensive - I was going to do that before 2 cars made it unnecessary.

How many days will you have?

I'll be staying in Grand Marais after I come out on the 27th and also on the 28th. If you're around and want to join for dinner, email me with bwca.com in subject.

I hope you have a good trip wherever you decide to go.

09/08/2014 06:45AM
boonie..... I strongly considered the Lady Chain route but since it's my first solo I like the flexibility I get with an out and back trip making it easier to adjust my route and plans on the fly. Plus I'm worried about Alton in the fall and it being my first time solo. The $70 shuttle wouldn't be bad split with others but solo that's a good chunk of money especially added on to the rental when I'm not used to needing to rent. I'm even having to fight the urge to ask someone to go with so I don't need to spend money on a rental :)

One of the routes out of Sawbill I was thinking about is through Kelso up into the Wine area. If I go that route I'll let you know and touch base and try to coordinate a meeting on Kelso.

09/08/2014 06:52AM
bwcasolo and ducks-

It looks like I'll miss both of you by a day or so. Have good trips! I'll look for your trip reports.

HighnDry-

If I miss you too - I hope you have a good trip!

09/08/2014 08:55AM
ducks-

I must have remembered the mileage as the price! I remember everything - just not correctly ;).

You will be glad you rented a solo though. Out and back makes it easier to know when you've gone halfway. After the first solo, you'll have a better idea of your personal travel speed and mileage.

Going out and back from Kelso to Wine looks like a nice trip - maybe we'll run into you there. We'll probably hope to get one of the sites on Kelso for the last night. I hear the Kelso River is a nice paddle. We'll be two in a small tandem from Sawbill Outfitters.

Have a good first solo, ducks, and watch out for the boogeyman ;).

Nuts! Misread my calendar at this end, will miss you unfortunately as I'm heading in (wherever) no earlier than Tues 30th or Wed Oct 1. Nice to know that you and many others are still thinking "canoeing" :) I'm planning to fish until lake turnover so will do 1 to 2 (and maybe sneak a third weekend in there around MEA weekend - my wife is a teacher :) on Sawbill )....hope to bump into at some point on one of these late season excursions boonie!

Agreed! I'll be in DC during part of your trip and then back probably packing while you are finishing up. Just have several things scheduled in that 3rd week of september this year. I'll look for your posts next summer again!

bwcasolo- wish I could make your sawbill run. that's a beautiful area that I really only "discovered" this summer and I loved it. I'll probably be going in Cache to Man or Moose to AGnes (or some variation of either of those routes :))during that time frame. Going in Stuart around the 16th this month also for a couple days in case anyone is interested (because it's there....and Iron L. is too with lots of WEyes :)

Here's to happy paddling for all and a long stretch of fall weather!

You'd probably like Little Indian Sioux North - head north and then back.

Or Mudro up through Fourtown, Boot, etc.

Or Moose River North.

I'll be looking for that trip report with lots of pictures :).

The best laid plans...

My nephew cancelled on me so I decided to still go but make it a quick solo trip.

Then I was so exhausted after work I decided driving up overnight was insanity.

When I went home to catch a few hours of sleep my youngest son decided he wanted to come to Ely with me in the morning. That meant that I had to add another persons gear to my already packed stuff.

On the drive up in the morning we chatted about what he was thinking this trip should look like and it was determined that he was more interested in camping and hanging around Ely than canoeing. So we stopped at our favorite meat market in Duluth and spent the day in Ely before heading out to Fall Lake to set up our camp. We never put the canoe in the water!

But I did get a chance to try out my new under quilt on my hammock and my son slept in his own solo tent for the first time so it was a great trip. Just not what I had originally invisioned.

10/02/2014 06:47AM
Luft..... glad you were flexible and had fun with your son. That driving up during the night is tough even after getting 3 hours of sleep..... can't imagine trying it straight after working.
