Not sure what I was thinking on our trip last week but I keep forgetting that what I look for in a summer hang location should be different from one in the fall. When we first arrived at our campsite it was a nice warm fall day so I set up right by the campfire with a majestic view of the lake.
This would have been great for the summer as there was a nice breeze etc. However over the 5 days the temps dropped, the wind picked up (80km/h gusts) and it started to rain. I went for literally a 5 minute walk in an area behind our campsite on the second last day when the winds were brutal and the rain was coming in almost sideways. I returned to the site to find my tarp completely pulled out from its tie outs and flapping uselessly in the wind. My down bag was getting pelted with rain. Thankfully it didn't wet through and I managed to dry it out fine in my dads tent. Had it been left any longer it could have been a real disaster as temps got down to 2 degrees Celsius that night. After drying out my bag I moved my hammock set up back out of the wind in a nice sheltered part of the campsite. What a difference. Note to self....When picking a hang spot in the fall, don't go for the scenic lakeside view. Pick a spot that is well sheltered from the elements!
