Thanks for the report and that's a bummer about the food. Doesn't sound like fun. I'm sure you'll get the urge to go again sooner or later.

Let me be the first to tell you that you are not alone when it comes to difficulties in the wilderness. My first trip we attempted too much ground in too short of a time, with nine people and four ALUMINUM canoes and all sorts of personalities. We got rain three out of five days, just a few fish, and only one campfire. We cooked for nine in a pan made for four. The dehydrated food was okay.

Yeah, it was hard, but I still had the time of my life. I tried to enjoy the beauty of the wilderness around me and let the issues solve themselves, listen to the silence and the loons, look at the stars, breathe the pure oxygen. Yeah, that portage was hard, but look at the incredible forest. Yeah, I'm breathing hard right now, but man is that air fresh. Yeah, I'm pretty warm, but here's a refreshing lake to splash some water on my face. Yeah, I'm pooped now that I am at camp - but this attitude is perfectly conducive to looking at the stars.

Ya know?

a couple days on the river and lakes and Lacroix is wide open and full of bays to camp in.

Sorry your trip didn't go quite as planned. I have an unopened pack of freeze-dried eggs from last year that I will be sure to check before packing now.

Good report, sorry your trip didnt go as planned. Drop me a note if you find yourself without a partner in the future, Im just outside CR and would love to make a trip without a bunch of Scouts.

I wrote the report just after getting back from the misery trip in hopes i could revisit later and learn from my mistakes. I just now decided to put it up. I am seriously thinking of giving it another go.

It was reading some of your trip reports that lead me to even consider it. My family is not so happy about solo tripping. Thinking this May just before Memorial Day weekend.

twston-

The first solo is always a learning experience in many different ways. You've already worked out some details on the trip with your father. The next solo will go a lot more smoothly. You may even start to find yourself enjoying it :).

You might want to check out the private "solo tripping" forum, if you haven't already.

Had a couple experiences like that way back when. You'll be back and enjoy it a lot more.

Naw, that is the evening of my company holiday party. Instead of jeans and a fleece talking about canoe trekking with folks I have just met, Ill be in a jacket and tie talking about lord knows what with folks I sit next too every day (and their girlfriends which I see once a year). Such is life...

Yeah man, you should give it another shot. The trip are not ALL that bad. If you don't want to travel do a base camp. For silence and relaxation in the middle of the wilderness nothing beats a base camp.
