Fly fishing is way underdone in the BWCA. I love going in June and watching everyone with an Ugly Stick and a jig. I hope it stays that way and they keep catching 10 walleyes a day.

Really thinking hard about taking my fly rod to the Quetico this June. I'll be doing some serious reading on this forum.

If you are smallmouth fishing in June there is really no better place in the world to fly fish for smallmouth - when they are hitting topwater. On a really good lake, 2 people in a canoe can easily catch 100 fish, often 150 in good weather. When they are deeper, 30+ might be a good day. In any case, they are much more fun to catch and the occasional pike is a bonus.

Andy, you have to take your fly rod ! Send me an email with your address. I will send you some flies. Remember in July or August we need to get Bob to put a fly fishing weekend together, on the Kishwaukee.

Mike

I assume you mean for smallmouth:

Poppers and sliders for topwater. Almost anything will suffice. I like deer hair or soft foam topwater flies.

Bead head nymph and leach patterns, wooly buggers, cone head leach for subsurface.

Clousers or deceivers work but are rarely my go to flies.

Yes, I meant Smallmouth. Thanks. I've seen reference made to Mayflies. Are there hatches that occur there that the Smallmouth key on ?

Sometimes there are hatches, but I have never been there during a big one. A big hatch is not good for fishing because the fish are eating everything but your fly.
