We were out 9.12 - 9.18. Caught fish every day. Targeted bass. Caught quite a few largemouth...some really nice ones. Very few smallmouth...seemed a bit odd. Lots of northerns, and a few walleye thrown in as well.

Just got back. Went to Pine at the end of the Arrow flint trail EP 69. Was in 9-16 thru 9-24. We just hammered them. We pinched down our barbs to keep from hurting fish. One day we caught and released over 50 Wall-eye. Lots of smallies and a few decent pike.
My last big fish has yet to be caught.

Would tend to agree that September fishing is better than August. The fish are typically more shallow as the weather cools off, making them easier to find. The weed beds are at prime just before they start to die out. The fish are also usually more aggressive as they "feed up" for winter.
That said, every person fishes differently, and not everyone agrees with my September preference. This is largely because people tend to have "favorite" fishing methods and lures/bait that produces best when the "favorites" match the fishing conditions. If you like topwater action, early spring is your ticket to paradise. If you like deep jigging, late spring/summer is best. If you like trolling or shallow casting - fall works out great.
Good luck - and enjoy the trip.

Not having been early in the year, I can only say that September is nice for me. This is a late September Quetico SMB... Not sure weight but 19" and pretty fat...
