My new obsession is the Superior Hiking Trail. I would like to section hike this baby in the next 10 years, and perhaps thru hike it also within the next 10 years as well.

For now - section hiking it seems more probable.

For those who have done it... how have you broken it up.... and do you suggest North to South - or South to North?

First of all, buy the book from the association, its a life saver.

I do a lot of mine from the North to the South

if you are doing it solo or just a single vehicle, check out the schedule of the shuttle

I do mine depending on the amount of time I have,

I will read a section in the book, see how difficult it can be, realize in the back of my mind how much I can do and then decide

Check out their site, it will give you info on trail conditions, water conditions

They have a facebook page

I have about 130 of the original 175 miles done

Have fun, take some awesome pics & be safe

Check out these for some great videos and photos of the SHT

On You tube check out video by Tom Wigren. He has 3 that show the sections well.
For some photos of the whole trail check out:

A Buddy of mine and I have been section hiking for the last few years. We do about 50 miles at a time going NOBO. Currently at Silver Bay. I have also done some solo hikes on the SHT. I usually go just before the snow flies; don't see too many people that time of the year.

I'm intrigued. Did the member -guide - maps deal and pouring over those. Considering a through trip this year - September ideally. May or may not happen but it is an appealing challenge. 255 miles - 3 weeks? Looking at north to south as simpler for transportation.

All depends on where you want to end (if you're SOBO). I did it about nine years ago now, and back then, it didn't go all the way to Jay Cooke, so I had it easy. :) Now, you'd have to stealth camp on the section in Duluth and farther south; lots of people do it without much problem, but technically it's against the rules, I think.

I think I averaged a bit less than 20 miles a day. Finished in about 12.5 days, if I remember correctly. Of course, that was when I was younger and in better shape, and I had a pretty light baseweight. Plus, I did it in the spring when water was everywhere, so I didn't have to worry about that, and there was lots of sunlight. I did spend too much time hitching into town for good meals, though. :)

I liked heading south because it felt like I was walking towards civilization. I dunno, it worked for me. You can walk north just as easily if you have a car stashed there. I stashed food every few days apart near the trailheads. Worked slick.

Just became a member of the SHT - so I got the book and some maps etc! Excited to dig on in! I think after talking with them I'm going to section hike this baby NOBO.

I'm also going to be at the Super Hiking trail seminar tomorrow morning at Midwest Mountaineering/U of M.
