I am heading out on Fall lake on June 19th. I absolutely love fly fishing and have wanted to do it in the BWCA for some time. I haven't been there for years now. I'm going through fall lake then to Newton Lake and into Pipestone bay. I would like to try and make it past Jackfish bay on my first day. I think we will spend some time around there. Then head down to Horse lake and Fourtown lake. Or we are considering sticking around Basswood Lake and heading out fall lake again on monday. Does anyone have any suggestions at all for some fly fishing location on these lakes? Some suggestions for flies to take along. Right now I have a 5/6 weight rod with some 5 weight line. I would like to get a heavier rod but I'm not sure that I can swing it in time for my trip. I have read a bit about putting a heavier line on it. I'm assuming that I could maybe get away with a 7 weight line? If anyone has any thoughts it would be nice.

I'm no expert but you'll probably like the 7 weight line as it will increase your cast length and stand up better in the wind. I would look for smallies close to shore. Look for submerged boulders the size of basketballs that taper down to deeper water. Right now the bass are right up against the shoreline. Literally a foot or two from shore - land your surface fly on the very edge or even on shore and pop in a few times. Often the fish will hammer the fly in the very shallow water. Concentrate your casts close to shore looking for the small boulder structure and/or vegetation. If you think the fish are spooking increase your leader length. Good luck!
