Thinking over your report I feel I need to warn you. I noted that you were fishing less and puttering more. Many, not this paddler, would feel that these projects had no merit. In my case it has gotten so bad that no fishing gear is even carried. Just a friendly warning about the slippery slope you sre standing on.

I hear there is an old route from NE WCPP that arcs up and over to Job and Musclow. If I came in that way I am sure your fishing report is all the bait I need to get my angling friends to fly in for a Musclow basecamp at the Wolf Spider Camp. I am sure they would not mind bringing in my resupply.

Great report, and how about those pike! I'm going to WCPP next spring and absolutely can't wait.

Thanks MT. Beautiful photos and aptly described! I've only been as far north as Murdoch on that route but there is obviously some further exploring and fishing that I need to do up there. The Knox island campsite that you mentioned is well worth a stop if you are back in there --- however your observations on the portage to/from are dead on -- especially after the rain. Also, if there is indeed a route coming in from the NE side to Musclow as Marten suggests then perhaps there are other options for that destination lake :)

What a great trip report. Thank you for providing so much detail. I am now looking forward to heading in the direction of Musclow some day. I was the dude in the tandem, with my boy, that you saw when you were heading in and we were heading out. We were both just amazed that you are lucky enough to go in for 24 days. You definitely get to live the dream of at least these two paddlers. Glad you had a great time and that you made it in and out with no significant issues. Thanks again for all your attention to detail. It will make planning a trip in that direction much easier.

I am from California but my time on a surfboard has been very very limited. We spend a lot more time up in the mountains skiing in the winter time than at the ocean.

Oh, and I earned a prize because I watched you videos all the way through.

Thanks for posting the report MT......Yes, the WCPP is a magical place. Truly wild and one never knows what they may encounter. Liked the "shore lunch" meeting, very cool. My second WCPP trip coming up, and the fishing gear is packed. Wish me luck.

Been checking out the videos. I camped on the other side of the river but in "Travels of the little north by Bill and Bob" on canoestories.com they talk of camps near yours.

Hi Marten

I have read the stories you speak of and they were partly responsible for me selecting Musclow although it was only a travel lake for them.

I am struggling with being out of the woods. I just got back and yet it's all I can think of. Somebody needs to grab me, smack me around a little and say "get a grip man you have a huge pile of work that needs attending to, focus lad, focus"!!!

A common malady I'm sure. As a consolation prize I am already wondering what next years trip should be. That puts me into the "dufus" category but I can't help it!

To “mastertangler” and all who follow this thread,
We enjoyed your detailed trip blog and videos of your recent trip to Woodland Caribou Prov. Park. Visitor comments and feedback of their experiences are always sought as they help us prioritize our work on interior routes and also better serve those who may travel the same way. It is clear that you had yourself another awesome trip in the park and fishing is your passion.

However, we wanted to offer some clarification on the practice of creating trails and new campsites.
1) Unlawfully cut plant or tree - it is clear that a number of trees and other vegetation were cut, pruned, cleared to create a trail and a new campsite. Please note that this is in direct violation of the Sec 2(2), ON Reg.346/07 made under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (PPCRA), 2006.

It is important to understand that even in a wilderness class park, regulations are required to ensure the park’s rugged beauty is not compromised by our desire to alter its appearance for the sake of comfort.

2) Non-designated Campsites – Creating new campsites is discouraged for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons are the cutting/pruning of plant/trees as mentioned above, potential to impact known culturally sensitive locations, sensitive plant communities, breach of agreements made with other user groups, competing with caribou on calving/nursery sites, and there are more.

Great consideration is given by Ontario Parks staff when establishing campsites (and portage trails). Park visitors have access to a campsite map from the park office that shows established sites. This map is updated annually and will soon be replaced by an online campsite tool that will serve as a great resource to campers. While some campers may discreetly pitch a tent and be gone the next day without leaving any trace of their occupation, most will leave an impact.

It is not our intent to unduly regulate and restrict park visitors from enjoying the freedom of travel within this great boreal landscape. But some controls are necessary to ensure its ecological integrity is guarded. May the high quality experience that we enjoy today be enjoyed by many generations to come. As you often alluded yourself in your sharing, Nature rules here and we learn to respect it.

Should any of the readers have questions or need clarification, we urge you to contact the Ontario Parks office @ Woodland.caribou.mnr@ontario.ca or (807) 727-1329.

Thank you for taking the time to educate me. It never occurred to me that the actions taken wouldn't be met with acceptance and appreciation.

mastertangler was kind enough to accompany me for the first few portages from our Lund lake access this past summer. (a brutally humid start to any canoe trip!)
I paddled past Mondo63 on their way out the next day!

Truly is a small world.

Glad to have come across you fellows!

cheers

Hey Glenn! What's cookin?

As per expressed in my TR Glenn was great company and quite knowledgable about the park. It is doubtful I would of pushed to the campsite on Laurus without his recommendation.
