My wife and I were on the northeast camp site on South Temperance on Tuesday June 26th and were hit by a microburst. For those who don't know about them, it is essentially a mini tornado. It was quite scary. The day was nice. A little weather came in, little wind and then some thunder and lightning. No big deal I thought. A little weather would be cool. So we were eating our first fish meal of the trip and the wind started to pick up more and the rain seemed inevitable. So up went the tarp and we started to eat. Then there was a roar in the distance(literally sounded like a jet coming like you hear in stories) and I said to my wife, "that doesn't sound good" within 30 seconds it was on us. First the tarp blew apart and then all hell broke loose. The tent(whick was pitched perfect) flattened and pulled out of the stakes. I dove for it, couldn't lose shelter I thought. Told my wife to grab a tree. Laying on the tent, I looked back and told my wife "let go of the trees!" as they were dropping like dominoes. Then it was over. Lasted 30 seconds maybe. Fortunately we weren't hurt. Spent a couple of hours gathering gear and rinsing off. Only damage was the bent tent poles. Recovered everything else. 5 trees dropped on the canoe(Souris River Quetico 17) but it wasn't damaged. Very lucky. Fire grate area was completely covered with trees. Trail to latrine was blocked beyond view with trees. Only the tent pad didn't have trees fall which is where we were. Second pad which we almost took was trashed. After 2.5 hours we went to see if anyone was hurt or needed help at other sites. Only 3 other sites on the lake. The other on the north side was unoccupied and that was good. It was hammered like ours. One on south side had people but the wind didn't affect them. The other on the east end we didn't check. So we left early the next day and made it all the way out to Sawbill. I am amazed I never heard of a microburst before. Thought it was a tornado until we got back to the outfitter and talked with them. I reccomend going to Wkikpedia and reading about microbursts. It was damn scary. Not sure if the sites have been cleaned up yet. Many trees were down and half of the ones that were still up were leaning badly. Very clear paddling the north shore line where it hit. I would have posted this under trip reports but felt it was important enought for general discussion. Be careful!!

Wow scary...glad to hear nobody was injured!
Thanks for sharing the story, it's a good "what if" exercise for the rest of us to think about.

Sounds like you guys were as prepared as you could of been. Looking back on it, anything you would of done different?

Thanks for sharing this great story. Glad to hear you are OK.

We camped in that site once, what an eye opener to the dangers that are out there. I always check for hazard trees and tie the canoe down at night, but should maybe think even worse case.

Did you report this to the Forest Service?

I was right there June 18th. That would be one scary event. I am glad you guys are ok. Do you know how far it reached? Over to Brule or only S. Temperance?

Got a reply from Sawbill Outfitter today. He said the damage went to North Temperance and to the portage from S Temp to Brule. The rangers got it cleaned up shortly afterward.

Best thing I think we did was keep the packs closed up under the canoe when not in use. So there wasn't much out at the time for the wind to blow away. In retrospect, we were lucky maybe that trees fell over the canoe without damaging it, preventing it from getting airborne and then the packs could have gone.

I finally filled out a trip report. I am now a believer we all should know about micro bursts.

Here's some great information about microbursts:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microburst
http://www.cimms.ou.edu/~doswell/microbursts/Handbook.html
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jax/events/windshear.html
http://www-frd.fsl.noaa.gov/mab/microburst/micro_course.html

Technically not a tornado but can and do cause damage above and beyond a small vortex.

We were at that campsite last week, I am amazed that you were not injured. The kids all agreed that iut must have been a scary experience. It also provided a good teaching moment...What would you have done?
