In the past, I had the passport book. This time, I am getting the plastic card for $30.00 instead of paying I think the $115 dollars for the book.
I don't plan to fly overseas so I see no reason to get the regular passport.

Get both if traveling internationally because it is a backup and I think they attach any entry visas electronically to the card. If only going to Canada I would only get a plastic card.

If you are just doing the card why don't you just get the MN enhanced drivers license. It is cheaper if you factor in the price of the DL too and does the same thing as the passport card.
I did both, needed the passport, sister used to live in the UAE but the passport card was only 20 bucks more to get at the same time---definitely worth that for the convenience, bit now that they have the enhanced DL I'll probably opt for that.

I read you don't need a passport to go to Canada, just that it makes it easier... Does anyone have any experience with that?

I believe that is true. But I'm pretty sure you need it to get back into US.

You do for sure need it to get back.

I go into Canada several times annually and the Canadians always ask for one. As l recall, they may be scanning them just as is done by US authorities. I am told they have instant access to data bases shared with the US. They often comment almost immediately on how often we come to Canada. So I would not go without mine even if you didn't need it to return.

Also you need the RABC for Quetico.

You actually need an RABC to cross the border into Canada remotely, whether Quetico or otherwise, and of course you don't need it for Quetico if you cross the border at a manned station.

I didn't even know they did cards. Glad to know the option as I am just about to go through the process of renewing, though I'll almost certainly stick with the book since i've got a nice leather holder from Duluth Pack.

I got both.
I use the card when canoeing in Canada.
It's waterproof!

I am cheap so only pay for a book for Canada and any international travel. I keep the book triple water proof lining in a water proof Seal Line pack with my RABC, credit card, etc. Would sure hate to lose that bag.
And to repeat, yes, you do need it to return to the US at a border crossing and you should have it when re-entering the US remotely since you are supposed to check in.
