Maintenance Rating Rating 4 (scale of 1 to 5 from poorly maintained to well maintained)
Entry Point: 23 - Mudro Lake
Approximate Date of Visit: 09/08/2021
Portage Notes: Some real up-and down...but not as bad as I had feared. That said, it was dry when I went through. I singled it with the solo canoe and was done in about 12 minutes, with some decent cardio in there.

Portage Notes: Rocky and hilly. You better be on point with your billy goat skills when taking this portage. We did it early one morning when exiting Fourtown to the Mudro entry point. I was a little groggy when I started but wide awake when I was done. It definitely gets your heart pumping. When finished you definitely feel like you accomplished something. Just take your time and watch your steps!

Portage Notes: This portage is not for the faint hearted. Very rocky, and up and down. As beautiful as the Mudro Lake portages are, I will avoid them in the future

Portage Notes: Difficult steep portage especially as it rained earlier that morning. Lots of slippery areas to go down while carrying packs or canoes and not enough room for groups to pass each other going different directions. Take your time, move slowly and enjoy the scenery.

Portage Notes: This portage was wet in the rain, hilly, and rocky. Not terrible for younger folks, but tough on me this year.

Portage Notes: Long and annoying. Its up and down and up and down, and just when you think you're done - there is more up and down. Be careful when the path becomes narrow around a "cliff" area to aim your pack INTO the land and not towards the edge. I made this mistake and got my heart pumping thinking I was going to fall off - but in all honesty - its fine. Just take your time and remember its going to feel longer than it actually is.

Portage Notes: Don't let the distance fool you. This is a goat path with some dicey, slippery when wet rock to walk on. I'm glad it wasn't any longer.

Portage Notes: I heard horror stories about this portage; some said it was the mot difficult in the BWCA, and if you do not watch your step, you may fall to your death. This portage is absolutely beautiful! The gorge, while deep, is not a concern, and the views are stunning. We traversed this in extremely wet weather, and it was not challenging.

Portage Notes: Between Mudro and Fourtown is really three portages. Starting from Mudro you can take your canoe through the 1st portage, but I wouldn't advise it. It's a little adventure, but faster to just carry the boat. The second portage is the long one. This one seems to go on to a point where you think it should end and then you're about half way. Wonderful views to the stream below. No risk of taking a tumble unless you've decided to put yourself at risk. Take the canoe and go back for the bag. Remember, you're on vacation, so relax. The last portage is the hard one. Lots of heavy rocks and steps with small toe-holds. A little dicey with a canoe on your back. Just take your time and be sure-footed. You could get hurt if you fell at the wrong time. There's parts where there's nothing to fall on but rock edges.

Portage Notes: This one did seem as bad as its advertising! It was narrow and portaging the canoe got tricky because I had become complacent about looking ahead to see how the canoe had to get through. A couple of back ups were needed for sure.

Portage Notes: Portage seems more like 140 rods than 104, and the trail is up-n-down a bit, with a couple of not-quite-white-knuckle corners on high bluffs. Meeting other canoe carriers can be awkward, as the trail is narrow in many places. Don't let a tough portage stop you though, for when you make it past this one you unlock the gate to a wonderful system of lakes, rivers, and many "reasonable" portages. Enjoy!

Portage Notes: Steep, strenuous, and not for those with no head for heights, but not technically challenging. No real room to rest and better hope you don't meet someone coming the other way. Beautiful view down into the gorge.
