Sunday, June 29, 2008  Side Lake-Sarah Lake

Sunshine! We woke up to sweet sunshine.

The clothes lines went up, almost every thing needed to be dried out. There was no way to know how long the sun would last, we had to take advantage of it. Oddly enough the raingear took the longest to dry out. We had some lunch, packed up, and it was 2:00pm before we were back in motion.

Eight college age girls politely said “Hi” as we passed each other on our way to Sarah Lake. Wow, these girls looked to have faired pretty well through the stormy weather. “Isn’t that wonderful,” Laura smiled and said, she just enjoys pointing out women can do anything men can.

On last portage into Sarah Lake Laura commented that she was just worn out from all the portages.

Actually, I expected this much sooner from someone her size, so when she spoke up, I knew she meant it. She was too tired to put up a good argument when I gave her a break and took the double load. I tried not to show that I was just as burnt out she was. This would be the last of a series of grueling portages until we returned back this way. Later, she enthusiastically thanked me for helping her out, I politely replied with a “who’s the man”, “You Are Honey” she said. Priceless!

We were met with strong Northwest winds on Sarah Lake, and this was exactly the direction we needed to go for the next 13 miles.

Half way up Sarah we came across a peninsula with a nice campsite complete with a little beach, this would be home for the night.

It would be an early dinner tonight and steak was on the menu. Last years deer hunting season went quite well, I harvested with the bow, pistol, and rifle over 3 different counties, and two nice tenderloins had just thawed after being packed in a small crushable cooler under dry ice. The venison was accompanied with some mashed potatoes and apple cobbler. Perfect!

We enjoyed a lemonade cocktail in front of a beautiful sunset and a light breeze and called it a night.
