Quetico 2009: Of Good Food and Good Weather
by Mad Birdman
Up early and very glad to see quiet winds, but this was the first time all trip long where we saw any clouds that looked like they might hold rain.
We had no problem with paddling Sturgeon in the rain, just as long as it didn't storm or get too breezy. It rained about 3 or 4 hours that morning, and we were able to slip down and out of Sturgeon Lake uneventfully. By the time we got through the three portages around the rapids, the sun was out and it was hot again. Paddling with the current is definitely the way to go on the Maligne during June! We stopped for lunch on a rock outcropping above Flat Rapids.
As we paddled through Tanner, Brett and Steve saw a moose cow with a very small calf. We paddled over and got a peek at the cow through the monocular, but we never did see the calf. It is rare enough to see moose on a trip, and here we had seen three. We took the campstite at the old logging dam, and the water was definitely down some.
We fished around the dam, and Brett jumped into his canoe solo to chase yet another big pike that we had seen.
Fishing the rest of that evening was mostly a bust, but we got a great show from the stars that night as it was a new moon. Brett had one more dessert for us: a chocolate cake baked in his reflector oven. Wow did it hit the spot!
