Trip Introduction:
Last year I spent 5 days in the Sylvania Wilderness with our oldest son, Adam. His brother, Brian, had football practice the week we were there, so he was unable to join us. He has since graduated from high school, so he was able to join Adam and I on this trip.
Day 1 of 5
Saturday, August 15, 2009

We had the canoe, kayak and gear all loaded last night. We were on the road by 7:30 this morning. It is a beautiful day. It is a five hour drive to Sylvania from our home in southern Wisconsin. Brian slept most of the way there. Adam sat up front with me and kept me company. We stopped in Eagle River for lunch at Dairy Queen. We continued on to Watersmeet where we bought our fishing licenses and some ice for the cooler. One of the nice things about camping in Sylvania versus Boundary Waters, is the ability to bring in a few more "luxuries" (like a cooler, folding chairs, and table). We stayed on Crooked Lake, so we didn't have to portage to get to our camp. It was about an hour of paddling to get to camp. We set up the camp and had a supper of steak and baked potatoes. Brian bought an air mattress when we stopped to buy our fishing licenses. The boys spent some time floating around camp to cool off. We were pretty tired by 9:00, so we went to sleep early.
