Monday, October 17, 2011: Avon, NC, to Waves, NC and back (30 miles)

The day was gonna be sunny and warm! I staggered out of my bedroom to find out what mischief my kiddos were up to and make sure grandma and grandpa or aunt and uncle were not tired of them already. Quick breakfast, 3-way loss to my brother and my dad in cribbage, then my brother was anxious to head north a bit and pick up his long board (surf board) so he could teach my kids how to surf. I insisted on a shower first - given that it was Monday and I had not showered since the previous Wednesday, I think it was high time.

Bro suggested I wash off in our very own pool or hot tub in the back yard. We met my brother here in the Outer Banks in 2008 and camped at a no-frills state campground. This time, we had gone all out for the occasion in the lodging department. We had a 6 bedroom, 6 bath house ON the ocean with an elevator! and a pool and hot tub and 2 outdoor showers with hot water. It was heaven.

I donned swim suit and jumped in the pool for a bit - even unheated, it was a perfect temp for this Minnesotan. Afterwards a genuine shampoo, some clean clothes and I was a new person.

Bro, his gf, and sis and I went exploring by daylight. We headed north and saw the hurricane debris in the sun. The Day Use area at Salvo had been morphed into a public dump, with inspectors checking the truckloads before they were added to huge piles of refuse.

We shopped a hurricane sale and bro picked up a full wet suit for 1/2 price. Kayak prices were not low enough to tempt me, and they were mostly sit on top models which have limited use in MN anyway.

Back in Avon, we prepped for the beach, got PFDs ready for the kids and headed for the surf. Son wanted to know if there were sharks in there (having watched Soul Surfer recently!). We said yes, but probably not cruising this general area. Out we went to test the hockey legs in the surf. Both kids managed to stand up their first day out. Son a bit longer than his little sister... Couple of tries and it was back to collecting shells and heading for the hot tub. I was pleased at the ocean temp - not too hot or cold. October is the month to go!

Fun afternoon in the water, dinner with family, and then a sunset over the sound. Perfect day!
