Day 3 of 9
Thursday, June 13, 2013 We woke up to a glorious sunny morning. We started eating breakfast and before we knew it we had consumed 1 whole box of cereal. Our plan was to fish Darky the whole day. We fished the channel northwest of our island. Within 10 minutes, we both caught 2 nice northerns-good start. After that, it was sporadic. We didnt see any occupied bass beds in darky, the surface temp was 68-a lot higher than we thought it would be. We had some action with 15-18 inch smallmouth, but no trophies. We found a tree which held walleyes and caught a few 20 inchers. By day 2, we had each caught 4 of the 5 super grand slam species. After lunch, we went to the northeast channel. Fishing was very sporadic, just a few small bass. After dinner, we decided to troll for lakers. I brought about 10 pounds of hardware-snap weights, flutter spoons, deep running cranks, and heavy jigs-even though lakers werent our focus. We trolled on a path towards the Ballard portage that was marked on our maps-but only managed 1 laker as we were just ready to call it a day. Still, I had my super grand slam by day 2-Andrew didnt catch a laker on the trip. I told him that reflected my observation that fishing prowess and portaging ability are inversely proportional. To prove my theory, I did catch one monster smallmouth pictured below before dinner. We got back to camp near sundown and turned in. Our second day of near perfect weather. I brought a weather radio that had perfect reception and I went to my hammock after hearing the forecast for another nice day tomorrow.
