July 23 – Making the Eastern most point - We were up early, 6AM, and had a fine bacon and egg breakfast. The bacon was Zups sliced homestyle peppered bacon. Hands down, this is the best bacon I have ever put in my mouth. We entered Ottertrack and cruised it the same as Knife. We were making great time when we hit Monument Portage. J portaged the canoe and I followed with the food pack. I head a yell and a thud and as I came on the wooden “dock”, J was standing there wet up to his chest. He had decided that there was only six inches of water to the side of the dock and stepped off into the bog. There were some other people who lifted the canoe off of him. He was a funny sight and he had “leaches” in his head for about two hours afterward. We took the short portage into Saganaga and headed for Cache Bay. As we rounded into Cache, we came up on a couple of otters and got a good hiss from one. Cache was calm and we headed to one of the two campsites on the peninsula just past the ranger station. After dinner, we paddled over to check out the pictographs. For a couple of historians, this was a highlight. We hit the hammocks early and read a bit. Moonrise got us out of the hammocks to marvel at the full or nearly full moon over Cache Bay. J’s hammock was orientated such that the moonlight kept him up most of the night.
