Rose to Clove We had light northwest wind that picked up as we passed through Rose, Rat and into South Lake. Choppy as we made our way to the height of land portage. Cross wind, with a little tail as we moved N-NE on North Lake. Shot the “rapids” going from little north to little gunflint and meandered our way through the wetlands leading to the sand beach on the east end of Gunflint. Winds were not bad to begin on Gunflint, but they increased, and of course, there is nowhere to hide on Gunflint. We had to simply gut it out. We decided to stop at the Gunflint Lodge to re-fuel on nachos, burgers and milkshakes that Saturday afternoon – not typical BWCA fare, but under the circumstances, we felt it was well worth it. The wonderful staff at the outfitters helped us with some Grand Portage blister-first aid supplies, so it was a great pit-stop! We headed into Magnetic, shot the first rapids, and made our way to Clove. We had enough time to set up camp, swim, and clean-up before the third thunderstorm of the trip. We took the west site directly across from the portage – wind kept the bugs away. Nice rocky point with enough area for a flat tent pad. Nice site to watch the lightening show.
