Wednesday, August 21, 2019 Got up a 5:00 purchsed bait, ate a little breakfast and headed to LaTourells to get our tow. Got there right as he opened loaded up and headed to Washington Island. I figured we could easily get to the Basswood River and camp fairly close to the river. Fish for eyes in the morning and evening near the river and maybe head south to Jackfish and fish that area during the day for Northern. The key word is figured, so much for the "best laid plans of mice and men". Everything was going as planned then we got around US Point and hit some chop. Did I mention Big Dave was 300 lbs. of big Dave. Well he was a little wobbily on flat water but he was real wobbily in the chop and was getting tired. So we stopped at the 1st sand beach and relieved ourselves. And the waves are getting higher and Big Dave is nervous which now I'm starting to get nervous. Did I mention we are all around 60 so we only made it to the second sand beach and stopped again. Now Big Dave isn't happy because he wanted to camp at the first beach and really wanted to camp at the second beach, we took a vote to see if we should continue and he was about as happy as Hilary at the outcome. We took off, got to Anderson Island and Big Dave is winded from paddling. This a new experience for me. I've never had someone in my canoe get winded from paddling tired arms maybe but not winded. I'm really worried about dumping the canoe crossing Basswood to get to the river and worried about Big Dave. Because if he has heart attack I've got 300 lbs. to lug around for 4 days! So we decide to stay at the campsite 1619 on Anderson Island. Decent campsite but the landing sucks. By now I'm really nervous about fishing with Big Dave. I'm worried about him moving around in an empty canoe and dumping it with all my fishing gear not tied in $$$$. So I talked Captn Carp into taking him fishing and I went out with Mr. Leach. We got into a few eater size eyes, a couple smallies, and Captn Carp caught a 5 lb. northern. Built a live well to store the fish overnight and Big Dave cooked up deer burgers for supper mmmm. Our first night was an experiment as Big Dave has sleep apnea and brought a battery powered cpap. Everything worked great and we slept pretty good.
