Wednesday, June 22, 2016 I have slept better every night I am here (maybe bears won't get me). I woke up shortly after 4 and went fishing. This may be one of the most memorable fishing outings of my life. For some reason I tie on my biggest Zara Spook to my medium-heavy pole with 30# braid and chuck it out as far as I can just short of the falls and watch it float back down stream (if you haven't seen the falls, this is a huge amount of water). I twitch it every so often but it doesn't take many before BLAMO - fish on! I spent about 30 minutes catching some of the best smallies on top water of my life! All before 5 am! All catch and release. So yeah, after doing that, I felt like breakfast and coffee was in order. Fished some more after that, we broke camp and headed back the way we came. Kind of sad as this was the furthest we were pushing into the park and we were now "leaving." 5.4 miles to a cut through portage into Olifaunt. Ooh, Olifaunt. Lakers! Gear change. I have never caught a laker. But I read about it on the Internet... Biggest, gaudiest, flashiest (& cheapest I may add) purple jerk bait hanging off a 3 way swivel with a 1 ounce sinker. My partner had 3/4 oz jig with a big white body (have I said white jigs rule?). Where are the lakers? Well, they say you just paddle all over the abyss and then you will find them. So that's what we did. All the way around Olifaunt, zigging and zagging. Sure enough, paddle long enough and you will catch them! After losing the first, we caught 4 or 5 as well as a real nice walleye. It was raining but who cares when you're having fun. Made it to camp - let's have a fish bake over a fire! Well, some kind soul had stached logs and kindling under a rock overhang by a "stove rock" at the campsite. Somehow we made fire in the rain with just a lighter and proceeded to bake the trout steaks and walleye filets in foil with some onion and spices with a side of "rice stuff." Man, so good! We restocked the fire supplies with the dryest we could find for the next people - pay it forward!!! There was a seagull here that was convinced no fish carcass was too big - he choked the whole thing down to our great amusement.
