Trip Introduction:
This report details the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Trip I made with my dad from September 30th thru October 4th, 2017. We entered through the Mudro Entry Point, #23. We paddled from the EP through Horse Lake, Horse River to just above the Lower Basswood Falls on Day 1. With heavy rains falling right before we came, the rivers were roaring! We camped there for two nights with Canada just across the campsite. We explored my favorite BWCA spot, the Lower Basswood Falls, the Indian pictographs, found and investigated the old Ranger Cabin just below LBF, and fished Crooked Lake where we were able to snag some northerns. On Day 3, we ventured from LBF up the Basswood River through Wheelbarrow Falls and Upper Basswood falls, paddling around the one mile "Horse Portage" as we had an incredible adventure that particular day! I still can't believe we did that....my dad is incredibly stubborn and confident in his ability to find ways NOT to take portages whenever possible! We camped two nights on Basswood Lake on an island nestled in Jackfish Bay. We had a layover day there as well, albeit a rainy, gloomy day. We listened to the Twins/Yankees Wild Card Playoff Game via a transistor radio. On Day 5, we padded against 20-30 MPH headwinds all morning and most of the afternoon on Jackfish Bay until we finally reached the Range River as we went out through Sandpit and Mudro. I've been on 12 BWCA trips, and I think this was the best one yet! If you haven't traveled the BWCA in the fall...or if you've never seen the falls on Basswood, you need to do this! I hope you enjoy the report!
