Trip Introduction:
This was a trip of some first. First time taking my daughter (11) without other adults, first time not base camping, first time going after Labor Day, first time going during a pandemic. The plan was to go in at Cross Bay and stay on Long Island, Omega, and Pillsbery before exiting either through Meeds to Lizz. Double portaging was the plan, but my daughter's (let's call her "R") pack was too heavy for uneven paths, so I had to do some triple and even quadruple trips through the rough stuff. She was a trooper through the whole trip and can't wait to go again.
Day 1 of 7
Friday, September 11, 2020 We left the house at 3am in the dark. Sun rose as we drove north through the Wisconsin Dells area. R slept until we got closer to Eau Claire and then read a book until we hit the Duluth area. We were in Grand Marais by early afternoon. Corn dogs on the beach and a quick stop in the Fly Box fly shop and the Beaver House. We then headed up the Gunflint Trail to Tuscarora to check in and square away our canoe and pack rental. Trail Center was dinner; we ate in the car. Delicious as usual. Then back to Tuscarora to watch the sun set over Round Lake before hopping in our sleeping bags for the night.  We brought extra sleeping bags, etc. so we would not have to repack in the morning. Just wake up and go.
