First Quetico trip July 2011
by marc24
We all sleep in this morning, no fishing for anyone. We decided the night before that we would get everything packed up, leave everything but the food packs and go explore the wawiag river for awhile in hopes of seeing a moose. Then, our plan is to head towards McKenzie bay and find another site. We hated to leave this one but the fishing just wasn't what we had hoped for yet. We paddled up the river about 2 miles, exploring the small ponds created by the busy beavers in the area. A nice leisurely paddle but alas, we saw no moose. The women love seeing moose . Oh well, the trip isnt over yet.
Back to our island, we gather the rest of our belongings and begin the trek back towards the main part of Kawnipi. The wind is slighty in our faces, making it a slower paddle than the way into Kawa Bay. We break for a snack and watch the young eagles in the nest nearby. We hit the main lake and head west now with the wind at our back and blowing pretty hard. I troll a deepdiver and catch so many fish that i have to stop or we will never reach our destination. Pike, walleye, and smallies all on the same lure. Both canoes reach the entrance to McKenzie Bay and the wind is whipping now at our backs. My wife brought along a kite so she unfurls it and it flies as we scoot down the bay. My depth finder finds a reef as we go so i slow up and start fishing. After determining that i have located a honey hole, we decide to find a campsite to call home for a couple days. We check out one site but wasnt to our liking so pressed on a little further. Then we came across a site that anyone that knows McKenzie Bay probably is well aware of. If you could give a site more than 5 stars, this one would be the one. Wide open, three levels, 3 fire pits, great hanging trees, and on a beautiful rocky point. Paydirt!
We had to go no further, and decide this will be our new temporary home. We quickly established camp, relaxed for a bit then Dad and I went back to the spot I had located and fished and caught, and caught some more. Pretty much every cast had good results. We fished til the mosquitoes made their appearance and headed back to roast marshmellows with the wives. Roast a marshmellow, lift up the headnet, insert said marshmellow in mouth and return headnet to proper position. They were pretty hungry for human blood tonight. Another day of no portaging, and another day of not seeing another human being. Simply awesome!
