Covid wont stop us this time... Quetico 2024
by marc24
Woke up in the morning and knew immediately that we were in for a battle again today. It is windy and drizzly, and although we are rabid fisherman, we forego it this morning so we can get a start on trying to get as far north on Agnes as we can. We quickly ate breakfast and broke camp and began to plow our way through ever growing waves and white caps. After an hour and a half of hugging the eastern shoreline, we rounded a point and decided it was a no-go at this point. We decided to see if the waves would die down so we all broke out the rods and found a "calmer" area where we could fish effectively. The bay had a small inflow of water and produced plenty of bass, pike and some beautiful walleyes. After a few hours of fishing, we were resigned to the fact that we may have to stay at the only campsite nearby, so we kept a couple of fish for dinner and headed back into the winds of Agnes.
As bad luck would have it, the site was occupied. We have seen two parties in two days and they were both at the sites we were aiming for. With no choice, we buckle down and slowly make our way north. Grabbed a bite to eat in a protected area, where we released the fish we were going to eat, and continued on our way looking for an acceptable site. We paddled until approximately 5:00 and Wesley spotted a nice site that we could call home for the night. It is much better for our group than the previous one, so we established camp, and ate some dehydrated chili. After dinner, Wesley and I took a canoe out to fish. He is a novice fisherman, and by novice I mean he has NEVER fished before. However Quetico can help even a beginner learn very quickly. He hooked up with a 19 inch bass, we both caught a fair share of them before the skeeters chased us off the water.
Tomorrow we plan to head to Kawnipi through the western most route. We are all tired from the strenuous paddle of the day and head to bed at dark.
