I did a ten day Q trip in the first week of April in 2012. Didn't see anybody the entire time. Trip got extended by a night when the all day rain turned to all night snow (on Argo). My final day turned into two fairly grueling and occasionally terrifying days of travel.
Waking to 18" on Argo.

I think Craig is right about a super early ice out in or around 2012. Lakes opened up and I was bummed I didn't have the time off to head back up to fish lake trout out of canoe in March. Thought it might be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I'm still hoping and optimistic the ice might hold up for a later March ice fishing trip this year. Not as optimistic that there will be snow in the woods/on the portages. Unless...

Agreed on the April entry. I remember taking a trip back in the last week of April 2012 on Brule Lake. No ice at all. The way things are looking this year I would expect something similar to 2012.
If I remember correctly, Dan Cooke that same year entered on 3/31/2012.

I don't know if we will see March but April is almost certain. I hope to get a trip in early if it allows.

Hey everyone - With this warm winter we're having, how do you expect BWCA to be mid-March 2024? Is there any chance for an early ice-out that allows for canoe access that early? Thinking about where we can do a canoe camping trip this early in the year (BWCA, Voyageurs, etc..).
Thanks! Mike
