08/23/2020 01:39PM Yes, there's at least one campsite along that portage around the Upper Falls. Lots of side trails to fishing spots, campsite, etc....all to the right as you're going downstream. If you're wanting to try to break it into shorter sections or paddle most of it...do it going downstream. (your first time through) Then you won't be fighting the current to try and work your way up it. You'll do the long portage on the way back through (if you go that way again) and have a lighter food pack. |

08/23/2020 12:40PM Jealous! Sounds like a great time! On the east end you have some options for a turn around point. From Curtain falls you could drop down to Sunday Lake and on to Fourtown and then make your way to Basswood. Or you could work your way into LLC and down to Agnes before heading back to Sunday. Or a bit further and get to Gobeonequet, down to Oyster and Agnes, and then to Sunday. And if you are really feeling spunky go all the way around LLC into Loon and do the lower LIS chain of Heritage, Lynx, etc to Agnes and onto Sunday. It would seem that little Sunday Lake is the common factor in any route you take! Whatever way you go, From Sunday work East through the different bays to Wind Lake, then to Moose. At this point you have plenty of options to get back to Seagull. The most straight forward would be Ensign through Vera and some smaller lakes to Kek. The from Ke through Ogish, Alpine, and Seagull. You could also go a little further south through Ima Lake, reaching it via Ensign or Snowbank. From Ima trek East through a bunch of neat little Lake to Little Sag. From Little Sag you can cut North to Ogish and out that way or keep on East through Gillis or French Lakes before finding your way North through Paulson into Sea Gull. Did I say I was Jealous? Then try and get to Basswood the next day to get through the highway area of people going between Knife and Moose. " Definitely second this. Personally I'd make a point to get on the water as early as possible that day, both to get ahead of the traffic and to avoid potential for strong wind. Same for the following days as you will be on the bigger water. |

08/23/2020 12:23PM Yes thank you I was thinking the same regarding the area just north of Moose Lake as being very busy. I’m thinking about taking the long basswood portage going west, isn’t there a campsite on the portage? Then attempting the short ones on the return east bound. |

08/23/2020 12:12PM Should be a nice route, some big water in there so hopefully the west winds aren't too strong on your way over. Have you ever done the portage(s) around Upper Basswood Falls? There's an easy, flat long one or you can try and do a bunch of short ones if you're good at moving water paddling. All the falls are cool in that stretch....and then Curtain makes them all seem insignificant but not quite as much when the water is lower like it might be in summer/fall. The border stretch from Knife to PP is very busy during the busy season. I'd be tempted to camp on Ottertrack or the north arm of Knife on your first night or two. 08/23/2020 09:22AM Leaving from ep 55 on Wednesday morning. A tow to American point then I will follow the border all the way to Curtain falls or even lac la croix before turning around to head back. I posted my route last year and got fantastic feedback regarding best campsites and what to look out for. Hoping for more of the same here today Return route will drop south whenever possible to avoid backtracking as much as possible. Exiting via sea gull |
