Is anyone willing to share what they know about the camp on West Lake ("S" chain)? Our map doesn't show one but the PCD says there is camp on a small island not far from a portage. Unfortunately the PCD doesn't list a grade or any description of it. We stayed on Sultry last year our 2nd to last night, this year thinking of trying West or South instead. Is there just the one camp on West? Thanks in advance for your help!

There are several good sites on South Lake. Paddling through West Lake last year, I thought I saw a site on the north shore. I remember hacking out a small site on that lake as a teenager many years ago on the south shore west of the portage from South. I would guess that 30 years might have removed all trace of it.
It's a quick, easy paddle on to Shade Lake where there are numerous good sites, pictographs, and good fishing.

There may be a hidden camp on West Lake high above the water on the western shore midway between the two portages on the route from South to Shade. I did not get out of the canoe to confirm it but I did make a notation on my map that it was worth considering.
By the by- the route from West to Agnes via Jeff and East is beautiful and lightly traveled.

Excellent advice, thanks for the help guys! We were thinking South may be a better option than West, just always something intriguing about being the only ones on a small lake.

Here are some shots of the campsite on South Lake: "
I remember passing by that site and admiring how nice it looked!

That's what I was afraid of, thanks HoHo (by the way, love your trip report!!). Might have to be our mission to check it out anyway, if we do I'll for sure share what we find. South is definitely sounding like a better option and think I'd rather have a nice camp even with the potential of having others camped on the same lake, as we may end up staying 2 nights there.
