Planning a trip to the Man Chain in mid August. Coming from Prairie Portage.

Any recommendations about using entry point #72 - Man Chain versus #61 - Carp Lake? We'll be entering on a Tuesday.

Thanks.
Molly

Since you have to go to PP anyway, I don't think it really matters how you get to the Man Chain. They're all so close together, just take what's available and plan accordingly.

I think Carp Lake is what you want coming from PP. The Man Chain EP is for entry from Cache Bay. I almost reserved the wrong permit 8 years ago (I wanted to go to the Man Chain so I asked for the "Man Chain" permit). It would have been a long detour driving all the way back around to the end of the Gunflint to start the trip.

Sterngirl, where can I send my invoice for 0.25 billable hours? :-)

I have not been to Cache bay but I believe it is some big water, where if you go thru PP it is not. Carp entry is a beautiful trip.

I would say go with the Man Chain permit, as long as you were not set on a PP entry. Longer to get there, and longer paddle across the US side, but less traffic and better company at the ranger station. Also, going in on the Man chain allows you to shorted the route by returning via emerald without going all the way down to the carp chain. Just nice to have a shorter option if you are held up by weather or declining motivation

Thanks, everyone.
HoHo :-) You can claim it on your tax refund.
