Any info on this lake? An old map shows a 160 rd portage from the NE part of Ogish. Looks like it might be an interesting day trip. I wonder if the recent fire has cleared the old portage enough to pass through OK. DNR report shows that this is a trout lake.

Since I was last in that lake there has been the blowdown and a fire so I have no idea what the portage is like. Maybe someone like Portagekeeper could tell you if those portages have been maintained at all in recent years. The lake finder report for Holt is old and not completely accurate as I can tell you there are bass and pike in Holt. Some of the pike are large. I imagine the suckers and little lake trout provide good forage. The lake trout should not be hard to locate but I have never fished for them in that lake.

the portages have not been cleared since before 1999, and there are apparently no plans in the foreseeable future to clear them.

Well, we tried 3 years ago. Found the portage location OK and were actually going to try getting to Knife through Holt, Nabeck, and Nave. The trail is there but not easy through the woods. Probably got half way there when the women were not too happy with our choice (and weather) so we turned back. I want to try it again this year as a day trip so we won't be carrying anything. Maybe just a guy thing.

marc, did you have to climb over, under and through trees and/or burn?

The two pictures are taken from the same spot (one down the hill, one up). We followed the stream on the map through some pretty thick woods but it was "doable". Then, we got to a point where it seemed the trail disappeared so we explored the option of going up and over, check the contours on your map and you'll see what I'm referring to. Fisher maps have a little "puddle" between Holt and Ogish, thats where the pics were taken.

I was there in '08 after the burn. I was with a group of 6 guys and we made a day trip there from Jasper. The one in our group that had been there before lead the way so I was just a follower. The trail (if you could call it that) was not maintained and we did a lot of bushwacking while carrying canoes. I thought it was doable also. This pic is taken on Holt. The meat of the lakers in that area is red, even brighter than salmon. I was fishing a jig and power bait when I caught this fish and I also caught a smallmouth while fishing for northern pike with a king of diamonds daredevel! Others in our group caught some really nice northerns.

Ray, did you go up over the ridge or continue through the ravine (if you remember)? I would love to try again as a day trip with my father.

Still working on an answer for you Marc but in the meantime I will share a memory of Jasper. One of the guys in our group was fishing from the campsite, dead drifting a frozen cisco when he caught a laker slightly bigger than the one in my pic. He put it on a stringer at the shore and when he went back to check it later, there was a northern of at least three feet in length latched on to it (picture the letter 'T'). He was almost able to capture that pike.

Marc, I was refreshing my memory with a friend that was on the trip with me and we took the 'low road'. The going was a little boggy at the start and we were following a moose trail. Seems there was a game trail between the two lakes. Hope this is of some help.

i was fishing in that very back bay of knife where the holt/nabeck/nave...portage comes into knife. and we heard some noise's we were thinking a moose at first, and i saw a guy (solo) come out with a cedar strip canoe and i asked him how the portage was and his only comment was "i wouldnt recommend it",and that was before the blow down, if your going into the south arm stick with ogish to anne, from there its hops skips and a jump from that point. but i always wanted to fish holt looks like an intersting lake with occasionally fished ? nice trout ray59 thats what its all about right there ! vn pic !
