We did find the Dore Lake pictographs last summer. They were faint and very difficult to find, but they are still there.

BWCAgoer: "Hi all,

My group is looking for a good trip 4-5 day trip option this year. Was looking at Nym entry down to basecamp on Jessie with primary objective fishing. Can any of you comment on fishing quality in Jessie? Targeting all species, but definitely would like to get into some walleye.

Thanks!"

My experience on Jesse is to troll shallow at dusk. The action is non-stop for walleye in the 0.5lb to 1.5lb size. Both times I was there was in July.

I’ve passed through Dore several times without fishing or camping on it, but I’ve heard there are some Lake Trout in there and decent bass fishing. It’s a pretty lake with a couple good campsites, but forget the idea of seeing the pictographs that are supposed to be there. Every single time I’ve passed through there we’ve searched for them and never found them. If I was putting in at Nym for a four or five night trip, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be spending the time and effort to get to Dore to spend two of my nights, but that’s just me. I’d probably dedicate that length of trip completely to fishing and learning the Pickerel Narrows, or ducking in somewhere else.

I don’t particularly care for the portage to get into Jesse, but I’ve spent a night or two on Jesse on about four different trips. It’s a pretty lake with three or four decent campsites and maybe a couple others that would do in a pinch from what I remember. As for the fishing, my recollection is that it is primarily a walleye and northern pike lake with decent numbers of both. I don’t believe I ever caught a single smallmouth bass on Jesse. I’d concentrate my fishing efforts in the first arm of the lake you encounter when you come off the portage from Maria, and the eastern half of the main lake. I’ve always done better on the east side of the lake for some reason.

Are there any campsites you'd recommend in the narrows?

Also considering traveling first day all the way to Dore and camping there 2 nights then spending the last 2 nights in the Pickerel narrows. Have heard Dore is a beautiful lake. Any insight on fishing quality there?

Thanks Jim!

I'd just stay on Pickerel

Thanks Derek5017!

What big island are you referring to? The one near the short portage into Pickerel?

Thanks again!

Can’t speak for Jesse. But on the way, if you fish the southeast corner of batchewaung bay past the big island, good bass fishing. If you have enough time, the Pickerel Narrows are fantastic for walleye and good sized lake trout. Paying back the good advice given by friends on this site.

The route suggested by my crew buddy Oldfingers and thwarted is good, but your time limit is a bit tight. When we went, we had three days going south, a lay over day on Russell with a day trip to Splitrock Falls, then three days out. No rush. With only five days, you could do the Nym-Batch-Maria-Jesse-Lonely-Sturgeon-Dore-Deus Revieres-Pickerel Narrows-Batch-Nym loop. A beautiful trip and no lengthy days, but you would omit your layover day.

Alternate loop, although much bigger lakes would be what we did last summer: Go in at Beaverhouse, portage to Quetico, go east a full day and enjoy the camping and fishing in inlets and narrows, go back west, then north into Cirrus. Final couple of portages back into Beaverhouse only a half hour from the final flat portage to the parking lot.
We went in at Pickerel Lake three years ago and were wind stranded on an island for 2 days.

I was there two weeks ago. Nice area as Old Finger says. We stopped at Jesse though our target was Walter. Many trees across the ports past Jesse but likely cleaned up by now. We did an out and back. A four day loop is a tough bugger. You will need to rest a day. Look at Nym/Batch/Pic Narrows/Dore//Sturgeon/Lonely/Walter and back. Others may have better ideas. I suppose you could cut across from Sturgeon to Elizabeth and back. I heard there is a great campsite on Holiday but a tough portage to get there. Have a great time.

Yes Americans can park at the Nym lake parking lot. As for suggestion on where to go. Maria, Jessie and Lonely lakes are really nice.

Hello friends,

Last minute EP reservation was made to the Q at Batchewaung via Nym. Looking for a recommendation for a 5 day Loop with one layover day. Fishing and relaxing are priorities this trip. Normally do 5-15 miles a day, 50-75 miles in a weeklong trip. Looking to throttling down the mileage and relaxing/fishing more.

Not really familiar with this part of the Q. Can Americans park at Nym Lake?

Trying to earn all Ranger station patches in the Q. Only Atikokan and Dawson Trail are left.

Thanks again friends. You’re advice has always been appreciated.

P.S. Happy Canada Day!
