Not at all surprised that you won the Trip Report contest with this report. Loved it!"

Thanks so much, Spartan2--we revisited several of our trips by reading Tia's journal entries during our 2020 COVID isolation, and have traveled vicariously by reading trip reports by you and others. We're both 70 this year, and hope to get a few more BWCA/Q trips in before we hang up the paddles. Rumors of Canada perhaps opening the border in September are certainly appealing. Yes, hindsight often bites us--near the end of our 2019 trip we discovered that we had camped less than a half mile from a picto site we hadn't seen before--now we have to get back to Quetico's Trant Lake someday.

Rand, I hope you make it through the deep freeze. We're in western North Carolina, and have a winter storm warning for the night, including 3-5 inches of snow. I suspect you're 20-25 degrees colder (42 here as I write this) and facing more snow than we are--stay safe and warm!

We've been single-portaging for over 40 years, but those days may end soon--we both hit 70 this year, and starting out with 60-65 pounds portage weight each may start hurting! We're hoping Quetico might open in late summer, but NC's vaccine distribution system is off to a poor start and I suspect vaccines may be a requirement for travel if the Q does open.

It was a pleasant surprise to run into Darryl and Isaac in Ely after the trip and catch up on each team's travels. We enjoyed coffee and pie with them at The Chocolate Moose at Piragis, made map notes/corrections, and marked more lakes for future exploration.

Just read this one too as a February deep freeze is about to set in.

Looks like the single portage is key to covering distance.

Kind of cool that you met up with the father and son back in Ely after sharing a camp site. I bet they were grateful not to have to go farther in the dark that night.

Awesome!

Thanks, Goose! It was a great trip. We've spent lots of 2020 evenings reliving trips like this one since we couldn't hit Quetico this year.

johno: "I enjoyed the report. I didn't realize how many of those lakes have pictographs, and your photographs were great!

So, how many times have you been through Joyce Lake? I still smile at the thought of those size 14 hiking boots :-)"

Thanks, Johno! In the '80s we picked up "Pictographs of Quetico" pamphlet (1984 printing) which documents 30 pictograph sites in the park. We haven't hit them all yet, but have a couple more sites planned for our 2019 visit. Hope to finally find/photograph the sites off Montgomery Lake, and to visit the site in Payne Lake's Ahsin Bay that we missed when paddling through the lake in 2017.

Not sure how many times we've paddled through Joyce, but at least four visits come to mind. Yes, the size 14 boots memory always generates smiles!

Thanks for the kind review--not sure we could do it all again on retiree's budget, but it was a grand trip. Because of our drive distance, we try to do 10-day trips each visit, and try to average at least 10 miles per day. The 2007 trip theme was pictographs; we've also done trips to hit 'named portages'.

TomT: "My knee is a little sore and I have a stiff back after reading that. Holy moly you guys can really cover the ground. I kept waiting for a lay over but it never came! That was a fantastic route. The maps and pics really added a lot. A perfect read for a cold winter evening. "

Thanks! The report was a good project for several cold evenings, too, and adding the maps keeps readers from having to dig out their own maps to track the route.
