01/31/2019 07:56AM Great vid with some great equipment! I can see uses for all of what you carry with you. Most people don't carry near as much, but then they don't have access to the remote areas that you might be traveling in. I think of how many of the winter trails that we travel on were opened by people on an old 10 hp Olympic Skidoo, or an Elan later on. My dad opened trails with a 10 hp Skidoo and a Collins Hudsons Bay Cruisers axe. Advantages to using those machines was that 1st, they were light enough to lift out of the slush or toss around on a tight trail. 2nd, there was very little that could go wrong with them, and when necessary, most teenagers (back then) could practically overhaul one back in the woods. 3rd, they were affordable. I've gotten through or over much tighter spots with those machines than people ever could with the new, bigger machines that are out nowadays. They were the trappers choice! That being said, I'd still take a bigger, newer machine with reverse and electric start over one of the older machines. If you can skip over open water, then you can skip over slush, provided you have the room for the speed needed to do so, and spot it in time. The old machines just bogged down and became an anchor. A big price tag on that equipment (about $20k?) but if I were starting over, I would go that route. Thanks for the vid! |

01/30/2019 10:01AM For those interested, Ive just posted a 40 min video going through my entire -40 clothing, equipment and snowmobile setup for traveling in remote wilderness. Obviously everyone has their own system, but I put this out to show what works best for me after years of trial and error. Hope you all enjoy and let me know any feedback / suggestions or pointers.
