12/11/2019 08:33PM I bikepack the endless miles of gravel roads in the Superior National Forest. Great campsites all over. Low traffic |

12/11/2019 06:41PM Check out the Big Moose trail which leads to a nice BWCA lake. One campsite accessible from the trail, not sure what you do if that is taken. But seems like a much more "moderate" hiking experience with the bWCA benefits. Big Moose trail Or, another thought. I have not yet done this but it is on my list. Take the Astrid Lake trail from the Lake Jeannette campground. Sounds like a nice hike and has access to several backcountry campsites that are BWCA like but no permits required or regulations about cans/bottles, etc. There are a couple you tube videos of the area if you are interested, looks real nice. 12/11/2019 03:57PM If you're looking to just camp, fish, and relax and not use a boat you won't be able to do that inside the Boundary Waters officially but you can be adjacent in the Superior National Forest. There are several campgrounds on entry lakes or elsewhere in the forest which if it weren't for the car behind you, you'd think you were in the park. (the above does not apply to hiking trails, several of which exist inside the BWCA too as noted by others) |

12/11/2019 03:17PM If you’re looking to hike, you’ve got the Border Route Trail on the Gunflint side that has many campsites along it. On the Ely side there’s the Little Indian Sioux Trail, the Angleworm Trail, the Snowbank Lake Trail and the Kekekabic Trail. All of these trails have official campsites, close to or on the water. Many of the trails are very rugged and for the experienced hiker. Maps and compass are a must on these trails as it can be easy to get lost. I’m hiking the Kek Trail next spring from the Ely side to the Gunflint side, 44 miles. I’d highly recommend it. Tony |
