VitMan: "Bushman: "Which way are you exiting Mudro?

Around Crooked to the Horse River and through Horse lake?
Basswood River all the way to Basswood lake and through Sandpit?
Friday Bay south out of Crooked to Fourtown?

Lots of possibilities and lots to see depending on route"

Our route to Mudro is still up in the air. Which route would you prefer?"

My first trip was in and out of Mudro. We did the loop from Mudro up through Horse lake and the Horse River. Checked out Lower Basswood falls which is really cool. From there we headed down river and saw the pictos and then into and around Crooked. Table Rock is a must see with great fishing right from shore. We headed into Friday Bay and down through the little lakes, Chippewa, Papoose and such.
We took the Eastern route into Moosecamp lake and down the Moosecamp River into Fourtown lake. The long portage south of Friday bay isn't too bad. The Moosecamp River was treacherously slow and very weedy. It was a tough paddle in the 85 degree heat. From there we exited south through Fourtown back into Mudro. The Fourtown portages are very rock but incredibly scenic. All in all a great route. I really loved Crooked lake and wanted to see more of it so this year we are entering Mudro and crossing over at Sandpit to the Range River and into Basswood Lake. Headed up to the Basswood River to see Upper Basswood Falls and then taking the long 1.5 mile portage around the rapids and falls so we can then see Wheelbarrow Falls and Lower basswood Falls once again.
From there we are spending a few days on Crooked and will head over to Curtain falls and maybe get lost and see Rebecca falls and from there we will return south out of Friday Bay but instead of Moosecamp we will stay west and hit Gun lake and head south towards Fourtown and back out Mudro.

For you the Horse River will be an upriver paddle as will the Basswood River. There is more Current on the Horse than Basswood but nothing bad.

If you like big water then go all the way around and out to Basswood Lake. if you like smaller lakes then go south out of Friday bay.

I have a trip report under my name if you'd like to read it.

You really can't lose any way you go. Bigger water = possible wind bound so be careful there and there is also a motorized portion of Basswood that you will cross but nothing crazy.

Good luck and safe paddles

Oh yeah, and don't jump off any cliffs. Not wise too take unnecessary risks when you are that far from aid.

Just returned from Iron, beautiful lake, but Crooked would have my vote for fishing.

Iron: We found fish everywhere on Iron, but no size.. Easy target is the falls area. You will catch walleye night or day.

Crooked: current and pinch points. When you find it, fish it.

LLC: take the 240 rod portage into iron. Easiest 240 I've ever done in my life, and you get to see a really cool lake on the way. Take Bottle Portage if coming from the north.
Fish the entire exit of the Boulder River where it dumps into LLC.

Wow, you've got plenty of time for that route. Just don't have your line in the water when you look at the picto's on LLC. (I don't think you're really technically supposed to be near them now w/ the border being closed but....you didn't hear it from me)

Spend a day or two on LLC, spend a day or two on Iron, spend plenty of time at Curtain falls and fish all over below there. (on the US side of course) Spend a few days on Crooked. You'll go right by table rock and more picto's before lower basswood falls. Fish below all the falls. I'd vote for taking the long portage around the Upper basswood falls and paddling down Jackfish Bay of Basswood to get to Mudro. Portage is long but super easy and flat. Then you can fish Basswood and another set of falls/rapids. If you find current, fish.

Hello all! I trust everyone is safe and healthy....

We are leaving Friday EP16 (Moose/Portage River North) spending ten nights and exiting EP23 (Mudro Lake). We will be going to the pictographs on LLC and by Curtain Falls. We will have a line in the water whenever possible.

Aside from that, what are your favorite camp sites, fishing spots, and points of interest? I'm particularly interested in finding some cliffs to safely jump off since we enjoyed that on Insula a few years back.

Thanks in advance for all the insights. Be well!
