I would be interested if any of you have trip reports for this area. We are heading up in 3 weeks. Going in lis up to finger, over to ge-be and down through Nina moose.

chessie: "A cool thing - if you do the 40 r into Lower Pauness, there is an Eagle nest in a tall pine close to where the portage meets the lake, as of 2 weeks ago, the juvenile was just venturing out a couple feet in either direction from the nest. Fun to watch, and listen to!"

Yeah we saw the two parents on the way out.

There is a nest on the east side of the island south of Con island on Shell as well with a juvenile in it.

CoachBigD: we were commenting that we've never seen so many young oak trees as this trip!

chessie: "There is thick vegetation leading to the shorter portage into Lower Pawness, can be hard to navigate. The more northern 40 r. is no sweat, but abundant poison ivy - don't stray from the trail! Have a great trip! "

That vegetation really slows down progress! We took the 40 rod portage. First I noticed the oak trees as I recently saw the prediction that the bwca will be a oak savannah by 2070. Then I saw the poison ivy.

No water level problems on LISN; just there a week+ ago. Beavers are making some efforts, but the below comment is accurate, one lift over N of Devils Cascade portage. Some lovely sites on Shell for sure! Saw a nice looking young bear on Heritage.

1.25 inches of rain overnight. My impression is that is a big rain up here. That has to to help things out as far as being dry.

Ha! That’s the hope! I’ll be pushing past Shell so no competition from me, if you see a beard with olive colored flying moose hat that might be me, give a holler

Safe travels

Karl: "Putting in LIS N tomorrow morning also, CoachBigD, maybe I'll see you at the entry

Which direction are headed?"

Base camping on Shell is the plan. Hopefully there are campsites left. lol

I'm sure you're right. Despite only being 10 days ago entry day was a blur....

mirth: "We had no problems putting in LIS a week ago. Maybe a pull-over before Pauness, but I could be misplacing a beaver dam.... we had a lot of them last week."

Pretty sure the dam is not south of Pauness, but half a mile north of the Devil's Cascade portage.

Awesome. Thank you!

Water levels are usually not a concern heading north on the Sioux. While I haven’t been up that way since June, typically, the river is never a navigational problem.

Heading in this Saturday and wondering if anyone has a report on river levels?
