You shouldn't need a saw for 98% of it.

If you're hunting for a campsite in the dark....it will be hard to know if one is already occupied if they're already in tent/hammock with no fire or lights still on. Personally I love sleeping to the sound of loons.

1) Most of that route is well traveled. In the spring, the Grand Portage has a lot of blowdowns, but those typically get cleared pretty soon into season. For this type of travel, I would skip the saw since you are not sitting around camp with a campfire.

2) Choose whichever tent is lightest and/or quickest and easiest to set up.

3) The VHF would only be useful if you want regular updated weather reports. I wouldn't bother, but I like reading the weather the old fashioned way.

4) That time of year, you should have plenty of campsite choices. After Labor Day weekend, the BWCA sees a LOT less traffic.

New member and first time visitor to the BWCA.

I'm headed up next month to do a west to east border trip on SUP. I'd like to hear from any others who have done this trip on SUP. Also I'd like someone who wants to go along in either a canoe or sup. Departure date is 9/12 from shasha and plan to complete on either 9/18 or 9/19 at Grand Portage so this isn't a leisure trip. I have a permit and so far I'm going solo which I don't mind but my wife is a little uneasy about. I have loads of experience with open water and long distance trips.

Question 1: should I bring a handsaw along in case of blowdowns on the portages or is this route so well traveled that I don't need to bring one? every little bit i don't have to portage will be important.

2: i have 2 tents to choose from - i am definitely not a hammock guy - one is free standing but the one i like better needs to be staked out. i'm assuming that the staked out tent will be fine?

3: VHF yes or no? I'm already carrying a spot x and a plb but would vhf be any use? it also has a weather band so if that works, I'd bring it.

4: how hard is it to find the campsites at night? my days will call for some long distances and poking around in the dark to find campsites. i was considering bedding down before dark and then getting up real early but i'm suspecting that the loons are more active around sundown so i'd be trying to sleep while they are crooning.
