Late October can be sketchy canoeing in the bwca. Ice is already forming on ponds here in the cities. Rivers give you a longer season, this year they are quite low but might Make decent canoe trips. Try the north fork flambeau in Wisconsin, rapids will
be easy. Fishing can be great

My friend and I on a last minute schedule took a 3 day trip out of Homer Lake (EP40). Stayed 2 nights on Vern Nov 4th- 6th 2016. It was unusually warm. If days are calm you could make it up to Brule and do some fishing and get back if you stayed on Juno. We fished on Homer, Whack, Vern, East Pipe and Pipe lakes. (we did not make it to Brule as we had been there before)Fishing was good for Pike and Walleye. Did catch a small Small Mouth on day 2. We were serenaded by wolves each night while fishing. Days are short and nights are cold. Portages are all small. Cool area with some rocks to walk up and explore on vern and pipe.

I Also took a Mid October solo trip starting at EP 45(Morgan lake) last minute, but should have came in through Poplar viaEP47 and avoided the mile + portage to Morgan. Although I would not have caught the 5 Small mouth all over 19 inches and 35" Pike in Morgan.I stayed 2 nights on Horshoe and the last night on the South Campsite (771) on Vista. Did day trips to Winchell, and Misquah. Have not caught so many Large Samll mouth in my life. Only caught one smaller than 18". Did get some walleye also. Loved this area and it was almost peak color time so beautiful. No big water to navigate really on either trip (Only stayed by the portage on Winchell from Gaskin so not a lot of wind issues.
I would love to go back to the Horseshoe area again. The Vern trip was also great for a last minute (called my buddy at 5:30AM on Friday, i got there at 2PM paddled out, set up camp, paddled back to EP on Homer to pick him up (pitch black by that time) and paddled and portaged back to vern. I marked my portage EPs as well as campsite with Glow sticks for the return trip. Kind of cool.

Thanks for the recommendation, Tuscarora!

Looking like we'll be going out the first week of November so getting ready to break a little shoreline ice

Planning a 2 person trip in late October, maybe very early November. Flexible at this point even regarding number of days being out. Probably somewhere between 4-6 days.

Let's hear your favorite late fall trips you've taken. Likely looking to stay near the Ely area, but again, flexible on all the details. Prefer to stay on smaller water to avoid the potential weather, wind, & waves risking a tip over.

Latest I've gone in was last year first week of October into the Fourtown area so looking forward to an even later season trip this year!
