schweady: "Going for rainbow again on a lake close to home. My fifth annual opener or thereabouts. I've always concentrated on super-ultra-light presentations, but will also include a rig with a VMC Tumbler spoon, based on your brookie video. Found some 1/12 oz. in some green shades that look deadly. Green has always been our choice as that's the color of the food pellets they fed them on the farm.

Ultralight is smart for rainbows, makes the fight more fun anyways. I've found if the weather is off they can be easily spooked by big baits, so might as well start small. I've also done really well with the Tumbler spoon for Rainbows here around Ely. Had the most luck in 12-20' of water, almost always fishing halfway down in the water column or on the bottom. Occasionally I will use a small jig or tiny jigging rap with wax worms, but there's just something about that tumbler spoon - I have very few fish pass it up.

Anyone planning a trip to the BWCA or surrounding area for Trout opener this weekend? I had a lot of success for BWCA trout opener two weeks ago on Trout Lake and just finished putting together a video of my adventures. If you're looking for tips/tricks on how to catch Lakers through the ice, I've got a few good ones in this video. Here it is if you are interested:
