That sounds like a classic Quetico trip!
I love all your animal sightings. Blue Jays are very active now and on the move.

Pickerel can be real mean with those west winds!

And for a headwind, you would want to be just a bit bow heavy.

Canoeing in the wind "

normally i agree. especially when i am solo. but in the waves we were in, and with two people plus gear, the bow was digging in too much for my comfort.

lesson learned.....boat was balanced well for control but i will be sure to weight the stern a bit heavier next time if the waves might kick up.

Depending on headwind or trailing wind, wave direction, etc, etc

Nice report. Great trip."

Thanks for the trip report. I picked my fish in the Rawn Narrows and the north shore of Pickerel near the channel back to Stanton bay. Pickerel can certainly be a windy place!

hi all

My wife and I just returned from 5 days / 4 nights on the southwest end of pickerel lake.

put in and take out was at french lake

first day was a bit tough. average winds turned into fairly heavy winds and it made the last half of the paddle take twice the time it should have.

lesson learned.....boat was balanced well for control but i will be sure to weight the stern a bit heavier next time if the waves might kick up.

paddling out was a a beauty with almost zero wind. stayed the last night at the pines (first time).

stayed around the islands close to the damn at bisk lake portage for the first 3 nights. we found many of the sites marked online as 4* sites were pretty crappy btw so take that into account if you visit this area.

water level was down about a foot from my last trip a few weeks ago.

mosquitoes were still around. fairly bad one night. but mostly they were not an issue.

there were tons of deer flies however. they were quite annoying but would come and go.

weather was great but for one day when it rained most of the day. nights were quite cool for this time year dipping to the single digits on the last night.

tried using the tent without a rain fly for the first time and covered by a tarp. although clearly cooler at night, it was very nice for afternoon naps, and being able to see outside. we both enjoyed it. we did bring our large tent so my 10x10 tarp was just enough to do the job. i might be a bit worried if a major storm had rolled in though.

the bush is quite dry so easy finding good wood. no fire bans were in place.....yet.

fishing was hit and miss as usual but over all was wayyyyy better than my last stay on the east end of pickerel. that trip was probably the worst fishing i have had there. this time the wife was nailing some good smallies, only got one pike (unusual), and a walley. i actually got 4 walley, which is amazing for me since i do not usually catch any, maybe a half dozen smallies, and no pike (unusual). i wonder what has happened to the pike ? i usually get quite a few and have only had a few this year on three trips.

saw a bunch of bald eagles including two fighting over a fish, blue jays, a beaver, only one turtle, two river otters, two bears on the highway, a bunch of loons, ducks, 3 pairs swans, etc. no moose this trip. seems to be less squirrels this year as well at least where i slept.

finished with our usual yummy lunch at quetico north.

cant wait to return.

next trip?......solo turtle river in sept?? hmmmmm
