I loved your trip report and the pics.

Poo Poo Spartan2 and Tremolo keep sipping the hatorade, you are both true skeptics of the legend of the Angleworm! Corndog exists. Just ask TGO.

Yeah TGO, we broke 112 hits, and it only took me posting 39 times. Many people liked that report.

Just drove thru Utah, Nevada, Wyoming topography on the way to San Francisco to visit my son. Our adventure, since we didn't stop except for rest areas, was at a rest area. Mt wife Barb had a close encounter with some prairie dogs. Quite a rest area for a change of pace from the hours on the road.

Thanks much! The pictures are so nice! Did a similar trip long ago, but was camping and had a great time. Thanks for all the "food" info- I try to hit this area every few years and that will come in handy!

FG,

The color pallette on the trip really was amazing, changing from morning to night, and at the places we were able to look at the same formations in the am and late pm, the colors would seem totally different. And the sky was some of the bluest blue I can recall. No pretty summer cloud formations like the BW thou.

Thanks Buz!
Looks like a wonderful trip, the pictures are terrific! Wow! what colors.

Thanks for the comments, just kidding about the responses, now that I have some, lol.

Nojobro, the main concerns are two things, mostly. Too much water, or not enough water.

Too much as in flash floods, when you are in the slots, and it can come from far away, storm wise. Apparently in the late summer and spring, local heavy T storms can cause flash floods in these slots, as that is how they are formed. Very dangerous if you get stuck in one. We were in the no rain season, literally saw one cloud for 10 days, but I still watched the forecast every day.

Too little as in dehydration/sunstroke/heatstroke. It is a high, dry, near desert area, and non savvy people could get caught with nothing to drink, if your car breaks down, or you excercise too much. The one slot we went in had water, all others bone dry. We always had 2.5 gallons of water in the car, plus about 2 quarts each for any hike we went on. I would say most people who aren't local would underestimate the amount of water to bring on hikes, if you didn't think about it. We saw a few examples of that on one of the hikes. And if your car broke down in the remotest spots we visited, I would guess that could be the rest of the day and night spent in the boonies before anyone else came along. Cell phones were completely useless.

So how did you know it would be safe to be in the slots those days? Because, as the sign says, "you could die out here." ;-)

Outstanding...added to my bucket list!

Great report! Your family will cherish those memories forever.

PS, I like a good non-canoe trip report.

Well said, Spartan2.

What a great trip! Beautiful photos. I have never been to Utah, but it looks like you did a great job of exploring and enjoying your time there. Thanks for sharing.

And I wouldn't be too serious about counting comments to your report. If you look at the 100+ from the other guy (who is possibly a fake persona, as tremolo points out) almost half of them are his own. ;-)

The value of a report isn't in the number of comments. And yours probably will get fewer because it isn't a canoeing trip. But a lovely trip report nevertheless.
tremolo 08/03/2010 08:42AM
You could create a persona, fake his tr, fill it with vulgar humor, and tally the comments.
buz 08/03/2010 07:42AM

Thanks for the reply, we were stunned more or less by the different topography around in such a relatively small geographical area.

My TR is off the 0 count, yea!!!!

Loved the pics. I think Utah is magical, and would love to go back there. You guys did an ambitious trip, even if it wasnt paddling or portaging. I recall hiking to arches, once by day, and then by full moon. I dont think there is anywhere more stunning than the desert Southwest.
