Nice report, arctic. You have included a plethora of useful information to go along with your story.

I wish I would've been brought up canoe tripping with my dad, like everett is fortunate enough to do. However, through friends and by my love of the woods, hunting and fishing instilled in me by my father, I have recently been on my 6th canoe trip to the bwca. Quetico is in my future and hopefully a trip with my father will be in the making for next summer.

Thanks for sharing your story. Photos in the report next time?

Thanks for sharing. A good read which as a "60" year old camper I got a kick out of.

quote rr: "I very much enjoyed your report, as I did a lot of paddling with my son, Ted, when I was about your age and Ted was about Everett's age. I did a trip with Ted this summer through the Falls Chain to Kawnipi. It's the first time I've done this for 10 years. Ted is now 40. I've posted the trip report, and I have a default folio of pictures of the trip, if you're interested.

Thanks. It's amazing how the years fly by. I hope you have many more paddling trips ahead of you. Canoe tripping is certainly something I want to be doing for as long as I walk on this Earth.

I just got around to posting some photos, but you have to browse under "arctic", as the photo icon doesn't appear under my name, even though I enabled it in my profile.

Great report. Interesting route. (No pictures of pictographs I understand, but no trip pictures?) --Goose

Thanks for sharing.

We hiked the Kash tower in 2008.

There is a Helo Pad in the back with one of the biggest bluebearry patches I have ever seen.

It is more of a radio tower/weather station now. Still neat to see.

Thanks, SevenofNine (you must be a Star Trek Voyager fan). I like your personal quote.

Wow, awesome trip report. I wish I had the Quetico experienced dad you are to your kids. Thanks for a great report.

Ho Ho, Funny you mention the other portage. I noticed it when we got to the unnamed lake. Only the treadway was visible, as brush had obscured the trail. My notes from 1981 on that area are pretty thin, as I was turning 20 on that trip, and who keeps a journal at that age?!.

Everett loved Quetico and looks forward to returning. He and my younger son have been canoe tripping since age 4, but Everett loves the harder, remote tripping, a chip off the old block.

Nice report, arctic, I really enjoyed it. Re the portage from Baird to the Unnamed Lake, there are actually two portages there. One goes over low ground and one goes over high ground. They start at the same place on the Unnamed Lake, but at different places on Baird. The high-ground portage is to the south of the muskeg portage on Baird. Maybe you didn't remember the muck because you took the other portage last time? The higher and dryer portage goes up very steeply from Baird.

So what did Everett think of Quetico?

thanks for the good report

Thanks for the trip report, cuts the days short to Sept.

Could you post a pic of your route?

This was a really good read-- lots of observations and information of the land and lake scape. I liked how you had comparisons to the past for some of the spots.

I didnt know about not taking pics of pictographs. I guess I should have known.

Nice report-- definitely one of the best I have read-- and a belated happy birthday.

Great report!! And good on you for not photographing pictographs. The casual disregard for First Nation requests to not photograph them always peeves me when I read trip reports. I'd love to see any other photos from your trip, though.
