It was just a dream.

Okay, am I missing something here? Where's the report?
SunCatcher 02/25/2012 10:23AM
Wow, Nice report, I have been on Sag, going down through Red Rock,
but never where you went. I like the WHOLE story, and "Nette" sounds a lot like my "Queen B" Charlene. Only Charlene would rather have a dead rat in her mouth then go canoeing...:)
Thanks for sharing!

Ok, what happened??? I was really getting into this and poof - it peters out.

Well, I hope it can be found sometime. I really enjoyed the journey. You're a funny cat. Didn't appreciate the baseball comment though... :)

Savage Voyageur 02/18/2012 08:35AM
Thanks for the trip report Garrett. The way you described the trip it was like we were along in the back seat. I have tripped many times on Sag and this brought it all back. Too bad the last part is gone.

At the risk of alienating myself from the other members who have written trip reports, I have to say that this is my FAVORITE trip report to date!!! I was actually sad when you wrote that you had to wrap it up. I could have kept on reading for hours.

I agree with Diva... you should write a book or at the very least start blogging about the BWCA!

Great trip report!!!!!"

thank you very much. it makes me want to write another one, only a little bit better next time.

and thank you paddlefamily as well. Those comments are very kind.

I agree with luft. You detailed your experience so well that I kept thinking it's great when people share their stories in such a way that are so familiar to my own. Makes me feel like I was there. Nice job.

On Diva's recommendation from another thread, I had to search out this trip report and read it.

Awesome !! Except for the part about the White Sox

I've never been past cache bay in the Quetico. I look forward to reading it. (no pressure if you don't though).
Wallidave 07/14/2011 10:30AM
was looking forward for some free time to read your report...it was well worth the wait...great read and style! Loved it!

Hoping for more free time soon to write a more detailed report of our June Quetico trip before it melts into trips from years past:)

We have put in at Mudro but went east into Horse and down the Horse river and back. One of our favorites. One time we even made a makeshift sail out of paddles and a poncho once when we had wind on Horse Lake in our favor. We have shied away from Mudro recently though since the Chainsaw sisters are no longer there to rent canoes from. Perhaps we need to see if we can get lift there from an outfitter and head west into Fourtown and Boot. Sounds like fun."

I don't think you're being too cautious to avoid big water. To me it's more tedious than fun any way. When you're out in the middle, it seems like a very long time for the scenery to change, and it feels like you're hardly moving. I much prefer smaller water, but it's the way I have to go.

Sag has been really treacherous at times, and sometimes I wish I weren't out there. I've gotten a little smarter over the years, and just stay off. We change plans, or take a nap or something. It's just not worth it. At the very least we'd lose our fishing gear, and at worst, someone might drown.

I did that same trip through horse, down the horse river etc. We were a little heavier than I would be next time. Even though 65lb canoes were lighter than 95lb ones, I think I'd go one step further and try to get something in the 40 range. I just wish I had more time to spend on Gun, Fairy, Boot and Fourtown. Well, all of them actually. There was so much water on crooked, I could see where it would take years to learn her spots.

@ Zulu, thank you.

@ Plexi, that's a nice offer, but I have lots of pictures. I have years worth locked up in a hard drive that I'm having trouble accessing. It got some sort of virus, and I have to take it somewhere to get the kids graduation photos etc, pulled out of there. If I can't, and I never get up there again, I may take you up on it. I've never made a frame for the wall, and wouldn't mind having one. Perhaps your pictures would be better suited.

Thanks for to all of you for reading my TR, and your kind comments.

Very well crafted Trip Report! I really enjoyed it. Thank You.
I am glad you had a great time. That is a nice stinger of fish.
wawasee 07/13/2011 07:16AM
I have been to Fourtown area 8 times. The best place to base camp is Boot or Fairy for day trips. Love to fish Moosecamp and Fourtown lakes. Boot holds some very large Walleye. The biggest one caught in our group is 31 3/4 inches long. Fairy lake is a good fishing lake that gets little traffic for fishing.

I've got some photos from Zephyr last summer if you need more for your fix. Let me know if you need them, I can add you on facebook as they are in a folder there, or email a few also.

I think what I like about Zephyr the most, is the solitude. I should have taken more pictures from up in the campsite towards the lake, it's kinda blocked, and a bit disappointing in that regard. But the solitude can't be beat. If you get the campsite, it feels like you have land on your own private lake. We seldom see another canoe the entire time we're there, and then only if the sites in 2nd and 3rd bay are taken.

Sometimes I wish the forest service would add another campsite, but then, we'd lose that solitude that we really love. Most lakes are part of a loop, and there's always someone paddling through. It's not the case if you can get off the loop in a lake with one campsite, such as Zepher, Flame, etc.

Well, if you're familiar with horse, crooked and fourtown, I'm sure you do real well over there too. I really enjoyed that loop. I wish I had stayed on Horse, Gun and Fourtown an extra day each. We paddled through horse, but had good success dragging rapalas on the way through, and just spent the night on Gun and Fourtown, with about 1/2 a day fishing each. It was just barely long enough to get a taste. A couple really nice campsites on each of those latter two.

quote plexmidwest: "Zephyr is a great secluded site. We spent 3 days there last summer in early August, but it was hot as hell and the fishing was slow, so we swam allot. We were in the third bay on June 30 this year, just North of the Zephyr portage, trying to decide whether to go to Zephyr, or on to the first bay. We opted for the first bay and did not get the East site, so we made the wrong choice. We talked with an owl on Z last year for about 30 minutes. Everytime we'd call, he'd answer. Must've been pretty lonely.
We had some success on the SW rocks you mentioned. I would do Zephyr again sometime.

We talked to the owl for a while too. I was happy he/she didn't hoot all night. It was sort of an evening thing each day, but didn't keep us awake.

Yes, one draw back to Zephyr is the heat. If it's warm out, the site doesn't get much in the way of a breeze, unless it's straight out of the SW. As it doesn't get a breeze, it can be a little buggy too. I enjoy the fishing, there's nothing wrong with a bunch of 2-5lb fish, but sometimes I think of going somewhere else to have a better chance at a 30 inch walleye. Sag for instance.

When I get too old to paddle, I'll probably stay at one of the cabins at the end of the trail, and make day trips to the canadian side of Sag, up in the NE corner. I've heard there's some big girls up there.

TY WW, Wawasee, and Ozark. Much appreciated. I sat down about 11:30 to write, and next thing you know, it's 6pm. I felt a little disorientated, like when you take an afternoon nap, and sleep too long. I think it would be fun to be a blogger. Twins/Vikes, and the bdub... maybe a little Cornhuskers too. Looking forward to a new era in the big ten.

sweet report. I like your style of writing and am getting to your style of camping. Might have try the Z someday.......

REALLY enjoyed that report! The step by step drive up was really interesting, I could see many of those places as you named them. I too get that warm fuzzy feeling going down the hill into GM! Ahhhh, and Sag, gotta love that lake, moods and all! I've thought about going to Zephyr before, but always was headed "In" or "Out" and thought "Maybe next time." Next time, I think I WILL check it out. But I'll see if you are headed there first! TW
