Nice report! I took that same route in '05 and that trip remains one of my favorites. Your daughter sure is a charmer!

Great report! Nice job on all the blue berries.
BWPaddler 07/14/2014 05:28PM
Have a great trip! Would be fun to compare photos and see how much the foliage has recovered since the fire.

Great report. I am heading up in a few weeks. Lots of good info in this thread.

Thanks for that picture ozarkpaddler - how fun to compare the water levels! Yes, I can imagine it was a nasty one with that fast moving side channel and it looks like you had wet rocks too. Glad you made it! Now rest up and get well!!

@wawasee, I really enjoyed Clove... the water was clear and the bottom was often flat. I bet your son had a blast.

@wildernessfan2, yeah, lots of smiles - even as I just THINK about that trip. Amazing memories, amazing times.

My son and I went to Clove lake on his first venture into the boundary waters when he was eight. Great trip report glad to see you were safe and had fun...

Great Report! Lotsa smiles. Fresh blueberries and the jump rock spot looks so awesome with nice clear water.
Thank You!

I really appreciate these reoports come winter time. Get well soon ozarkpaddler!

GREAT, I NEEDED THAT! Sitting here recuperating from surgery I thought some trip reports would be good. Enjoyed every word of it! BTW, here's an old pic I took at Horsetail. It can be a "Booger" of a portage. Had one nasty fall there. Thanks for sharing!
BWPaddler 02/13/2012 02:57PM
Thanks Spartan2, coming from you that means a LOT! :) I cannot tell you how glad I am that my Horsetail Rapids experience was not the same as yours. I was nervous about it all trip... I can see how trying to hug that slanted rock while carrying anything would be HARD. I really appreciated the heads up.

Great trip report, BWPaddler. Sounds like you had a wonderful time and did some really valuable bonding with dd2.

Nice photos, too.

Thanks all!

@luft, welllll, I didn't speak too plainly about the "issues" as the text is mostly from a book we have as a family. dd2 was really a handful on some occasions (she struggles with issues and I struggle with parenting around them). It worked well to outnumber her 3 to 1 :) and to have an 18 year old boy for her to follow around like a puppy dog - fishing when he fished, making a fire when he made a fire, etc. I'd still take her by myself, but this combination was MUCH more favorable - anyone but her parents are just WAY MORE COOL even at the young age of nine. Sigh.

I didn't write about when she got chilled and demanded her jacket (in the MIDDLE of a pack) just as we hit a windy stretch and couldn't calm down until I found a way to get her something warm... I didn't write about the meltdowns over meals at odd times and how I didn't do so well bringing snacks that were easily accessible... I didn't write about how I skipped bringing a day pack on purpose, because she would have claimed that and refused to pack the GG Solo I needed her to carry... :) All water under the bow by now!! I choose to remember the best of the times and to know that we succeeded despite those challenges.

By the way, I liked going without a day pack - it worked well and I did it on the remaining trips this year too. I think the solo tenting thing worked because her tent was sandwiched between the other two tents at that location - so she could feel surrounded and safe. I also LOVED my lightweight paddle. It was fantastic and I'll probably never go back to something heavier.

Another great trip report.

I love reading your reports because they are filled with nuggets of parental wisdom on how to travel with kids. For me they offer valuable pointers on where and how to trip as a "solo adult" with kids and they give me the confidence to get out there and do it.

Congrats to DD2 on her solo tenting! That is a huge milestone. WOW!

Great trip report. I love reading these reports and seeing how special the BWCA is and how it brings families together. It is more than just the trip itself. The planning, the adventure of getting to and returning from and all of the reminiscing after. What a wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great trip report. I have been through this area many times and I think I will take my two brothers here next year. It is a nice three-five day trip.

It was great to meet you mocha! Wish I had more time hanging out on the Trail!
