04/02/2023 02:21PM The Arthur Carhart trip done in 1921 used this connection between Kawishiwi and Perent. We replicated the Carhart trip in 2020,2021 and 2022. Take a look at the March-April edition of Minnesota Conservation Volunteer for trip report of the ‘22 trip. |

12/04/2020 04:34PM Check out this fall’s Circle Tour trip report. There is a way through and has been for some time. The key is finding where to start on the Kawishiwi Lake end. The trip report has coordinates. Maps that show the portage start in the wrong place, an artifact from way back. The coordinates will get you started and the path is there. 2.0 miles but it links you into a great wilderness trip. |

11/12/2020 04:46PM If anyone is looking back at this point, theoretically Kawishiwi Lake to Perent Lake portage of 2.5 miles can and has been done. Not by me, but look at this story. "Then it was on to the two-mile Kawishiwi-Perent portage. It had been first blazed around 1901 by Tom Parent. Later logging obliterated it, as timber companies covered it in slash and other waste. In preparation for the adventure, McCann first rediscovered and mapped the lost portage during the summer. It took the crew a mere 3.5 hours to get everyone and everything across the portage. The weather was clear and cool and perfect for hauling canoes and gear. McCann said the portage passes through a diverse forest, including a high ridge studded with maple trees that “shimmered with reds and golds.”" Paddling through history: Canoe crew retraces historic Boundary Waters ‘Circle Tour’ |

03/05/2014 08:47AM I should have been more clear - Yep...a direct link between the two. At first I though we could head North out of Kawishiwi, then loop back East and down to Hog Creek. - Thanks for all the input ! |

03/04/2014 08:12PM Are you asking if there is a direct (lake-to-lake) or an indirect route? Old maps like Superior NF 1929 show a direct portage route from Perent to Kawishiwi. That trail is probably long gone. Maps do show a water way of sorts but the old 1929 portage trail does not even skirt along the water way and that probably says much about navigating that channel. |

03/04/2014 10:05AM Beymer's route book, Eastern volume, covers a route from Hog Creek EP36, through Perent Lake (on Day 1 of 8) and ends at Kawishiwi Lake. He called it the "Long Rivers Route" -- 8 days, 21 lakes, 3 rivers, 1 creek, 52 portages(!); difficulty: "challenging." Fisher maps: F-3,4,5,10, 11. --Goose |
