If anyone is thinking about camping out at South lake at minimum the site that connects to the brt is closed. It looks like a tornado or similarly massive storm came through around May 23rd (or at least thats when the park found out and closed it) and knocked down a very large number of trees. There is a cleared trail down, but there wasn't an open patch of ground to hitch a tent even if you wanted. My wife and I found out the hard way after 8hrs of hiking through the rain soaked through our rain gear that the park site does not have the most up-to-date information about conditions. Suffice to say we wish we knew ahead of time. Please pass the word along.

As far as I know that site has been closed since the Father's Day storm in 2016.

I realize it is my own responsibility to check conditions but I'm not finding anything recent about the site in question. It just seems like everyone knows about it but no one says anything. Even when I was getting my permit and explaining the route we were taking there was no mention that that site was no good nor even on my thread explaining my plan. Again my fault, just would've been helpful...

I was not trying to say that you should have known the site is closed. Sorry if you misunderstood.

I'm not upset at you, just frustrated at the situation. I thought I had done all I reasonably could when this important info that seems like common knowledge just slipped everyone's mind and isn't posted where it should be. Regardless, this isn't about me I just want people to know to specifically ask about that site should it be on their agenda. I bear no ill will toward anyone here.

I attended a meeting at the forest service a month ago and they have detailed plans on getting that campsite open this summer. I believe they said July. It's on their list of things to do.

Also, the northernmost campsite on Partridge Lake (overnight hiking EP59 on the South Lake Trail / Border Route Trail) is closed as well. Not sure if they have plans to open that one, I'll email today and find out.

That was one of my favorites.

Does anyone know if other campsites on South lake are closed/damaged? I plan on heading there at the end of the month.
Thanks!

Our fishing guide Adam Treeful says the one by the portage, of the three campsites on the western / northern edge, is open. He's not sure about the two on the south side, but we think they are open. We think the only one closed is the South Lake Trail hiking campsite.

However, only some campsites have hiking trails from the Border Route Trail. The rest are made to access from canoe only.

Yea that site off the trail is useless. I mean there's a very small open space you could fit a tent, but it just isn't worth the effort (not to mention disallowed). The access to the site looks like it was cut fairly recently but it's still a hike. I took a few min of video going up maybe a 3rd of the way up to the trail. I'll figure out how to post it later.

From the Forest Service today (June 9, 2017):

We had a crew check out the spur trail to the Border Route site on Patridge and indeed, it’s obliterated. They started to work on clearing it but ran out of time. We will get to it sometime this summer but it may be a while. I’ll let Susan McGowan-Stinski know so that she can send a message to the other cooperators. Thanks for the heads up! Have a good weekend!
