Hi! Heading in on Saturday 7-21-1017 at Sawbill and was wondering if you can access the campsite in the far NE of Alton via the Kelso River? I thought it might be easier to check out to see if its occupied by foot coming in the "back door" and if it's open, go in that way. Thanks folks!
Yes, you can. Attached is the campsite info. Several people mention that you can access via the Kelso river. Have a great trip, the Kelso river is very pretty.
Walking I'm sure would take longer than portaging either directly into Alton or taking the Kelso River (both banks are quite marshy. The portage into Alton is easy, the portage to the Kelso River is short up a steep bank. Photo is from the Kelso River about half way Kelso to Sawbill.

Very nice campsite, but well used. I hope you stop at the Doleman Rock when you were on the Kelso River. It will be on your left side if you are traveling south. Look for a huge rock supported by 3 small rocks on a solid rock point.
