I got back late last week from my 21 day solo into the Kopka PP. Pretty good trip overall. Northerns were hitting good, biggest was 38.5 inches but dozens in the 26 to 30 inch range. Walleyes were really tough to catch, biggest was 22.5 inches some 20 inchers but few and far between. As usual took enough food to feed an army and packed it around then packed it back home. Weather was 45 to 50 degrees during the day and low 40s at night. I won't say it rained all the time but mid trip I meet up with an old man with long white hair and a long white beard who was gathering animals two by two. Saw the sun for a total of less than 12 hours for the entire trip. It rained every day all day. The only time I had my rain gear off was one quick dip in the lake or to sleep. Saw no moose [lots of tracks and caribou tracks] saw lots of beavers, one really big bear about 100 yards away and a couple of eagles. Also saw not a soul, did hear a couple of float planes a long way off. Some dumb A-- forget his camera at home. The area I was in was as rough terrain as WCPP, I hope to go back and see it in the sunshine. FRED

Sounds like an interesting trip, Fred - too bad you didn't have a little better weather. Boy, I wish you had some pics to share ;). Put that camera on the packing list!

Yeah, that sounds like a challenging trip. Where did you enter and did you do a loop?

Nice job Fred. 21 days in the tamest of parks is cool enough. But it sounded like a real adventure.

Where is Kopa Provincial Park? Or is it the Kopka PP?

I spelled Kopa wrong it is KOPKA PP. I entered at the junction of Sparkling Lake and the Bright Sands River. This junction is called several different names, depending on whom you talk to or which map you look at, I've seen it as Sparkling River, Bright Sands Bridge, Little Kashishibog River, or simply no name period. We have always called it the Bright Sands bridge, which is wrong as the Bright Sands bridge is actually 15-20 miles south on the Grahman road. It is 60 miles up the Grahman from the Queens Highway number 17. The GPS cords. I have are N 49 48. 374 W 090 16. 500. There is a "campground " just south of the bridge about a mile that has a sign Entery To Bright Sands River on the west side of the road, that's where I leave my truck when I go to the BSR. About 1/2 mile north of the bridge is another "campground" on the east side of the road, that's where I entered and left my truck. I paddled the length of Sparkling and entered the Kashishibog river, went east into the Kash.... lake then went north, then turned east into the Savage River and into Savage Lake. Base camped there 2 days and went east into the next lake, turned around and went back the same way out, back to the bridge. Loaded up, drove a couple of miles south and entered the BS river, went NW into south Harmon, base camped there a couple of days, went west to Rude Lake ,Scruffy Lake, and Mountairy Lake, traveled back to Rude then to a couple other lakes off Rude, then back to my orginal base camp site on the BS, then back to my truck. I always carry my camera in my life jacket pocket, just got in a hurry to get away from the world and didn't check that pocket before I left home, I did have the extra battery all charged up in my dry box, maybe the wife will buy that as an excuse to go back that long next year. No pictures Honey but I'll get some this year. FRED

did you look at the blackwater as well? is your deep creek set up as a solo? what made you choose the deep creek? thanks, looking into these canoes.

I orded my Deep Creek purely on line and talking to John Diller. I told John what I wanted in a solo, how much I weighed, [didn't lie like my drivers license] where I intended to trip and for how long, about what my packs would weigh, anmd that I fished and wanted a rock solid ride [none of that "tender" crap for me] and that I didn't care about breaking any speed records. Sort of a longish pause on the other end and he said "You need the Deep Creek Solo, it will do everthing you want and will still paddle easy". He was right on, yes there are a couple of things I would change, but all and all very pleased. It is set up as a solo, as I have several tandems. I enjoy going with my family but look forward to going alone. Figured this is probably the only canoe that I will get to put the first scratch in so I wanted it to be special, The Dark Lady is that. I looked at the BlackWater on line and wasn't impressed with it'slook. FRED
