Has anyone ever tried painting an old royalex canoe? I bought a used vagabond from sawbills last year. It’s very scuffed up from the near 16 years of rental. Any advice?
Thanks

I know that Krylon sells a spray paint for plastic. It has a picture of a pvc chair on its lable. I also know that it adheres to royalex. I don't know if it will give you satisfactory res ults. It didn't for me but I know that was my fault and not necessarily the paint.

If it's very deep gouges I patch with 2-part JB Weld, then spray the Krylon. For shallow scratches, the Krylon works. It will eventually wear off, but just re-paint. Here's a few pics of a badly abused canoe I re-furbished doing the same. The "Gouge" I also used the JB Weld, the scraped stem just received Krylon paint.

I have started to work on the canoe. I sanded down all the thwarts and revarnished them. I painted the gunnels. They were a very scratched up black. I will start the primer on the canoe tonight. Can’t wait.

Great project. I have also been thinking about painting my Vagabond as well, just to spruce it up. It looks like you sanded it, primed it, then painted it with Rustoleum Topside, right?
Also, since you got that Vagabond from Sawbill, I am certain I rented that one a couple years ago. Sorry about the scrape ;)

Ha! Thanks. Yes I did all the things you said. I’ll give you one bit of advice. Don’t fix your vagabond up. I just got back from the BWCA. Because of the paint job it took away my freedom. I was so concerned about not scratching the boat it took over the whole trip. I had a great boat that I didn’t worry about in my past two trips. Just my opinion

The Krylon everybody is talking about is Fusion. I've used it on motorcycle plastics and it's just about the best rattle can out there. "
I have a 27 foot sailboat and just finished painting it. I loved how it turned out. So I thought I’d do the same to my canoe.
I sanded it. Used rustoleum marine topside primer. Then used rustoleum marine topside white.
It’s great paint. Just got back from the BWCA and boat did awesome. But while there I regretted painting the canoe. Only because it sort of took away the freedom I had with it when it was green and in rough condition. Oh well.
